Hi Serendipity, i've heard a bit about it on the news and seen the adverts on tv - think its brilliant but personally would have thought it better to catch the older girls first. My daughter has just started year 11 and is 16 next month so by the time 2011 comes around she'll be turned 18 !!

Surely common sense to get those closest to the legal age first - no matter how much we don't want to admit it may happen - i'd prefer to think she was protected from the start

That's exactly what you would think wouldn't you!! It would make more sense to work there way down the age scale not up from 11 years. :rolleyes:

It will still be necessary to have regular smears as the vaccine does not protect against all strains of the virus that causes cervical cancer.

I feel that widespread vaccination will lead to complacency, women may believe that having been vaccinated they can safely refrain from the smear/pap tests, which incidentally are still considered necessary by the medical field - even after vaccination.

HPV vaccine is only effective against certain strains of the virus that causes cerivcal cancer... there are many strains. The vaccine whilst heralded by some as a breakthrough is best viewed in context, it is not a cure, merely a prophylactic for a virus that can cause cancer.

The vaccine has only been on the market mere months. There is little data on side effects as yet. Vaccines have their place, I however would suggest you tread rather carefully.

It has to be given before you are sexually active whatever the age!

I had a cervical cancer scare last year, and I had no trace of the HPV virus, this virus is not the only cause of cervical cancer. So smears will still be necessary. I do worry that this vaccine could make young women feel that they do not need to bother with smears.

I have just read an article where i gleaned this information:
There are over a 100 types of HPV but only 13 cause cancer. The others are harmless or cause conditions like genital warts.

The vaccine protects against 2 strains of HPV, types 16 and 18, which cause over 70% of all cervical cancers in the UK.

Three doses of the vaccine are needed over a 6 month period which must be completed.

It will be offered yearly to girls aged 12-13 years starting from August 2008. A 3 year one-off catch up programme will also start from autumn 2008 which offers the vaccine to girls aged 13-18 years old (the timings of the catch up may differ for Wales, Scotland and Northen Ireland)

It is not a compulsory vaccine.

HPV vaccination protects against over 70% of cervical cancers, but it does not protect against all cervical cancers.
Therefore cervical screening will continue to be essential.

My daughter has just turned 13 and was offereed the vaccine at school.

After a long discussion with her we (her and I) decided not to go with it just now.

There was also a Despatches programme on T.V. about two month ago where a very eminent female gynaecologist basically said that....

1. Even if a woman comes into contact with strains 16 and 18 that over 80% have a natural immunity to it.

2. Of the remainder 20% of women who develop precancerous cells only one in three will go on to develop full blown cancer.

3. Cervical cancer is very treatable with a high success rate.

4. The female gynae doc more or less implied that this was all media hyped up by the drug companies (who have sole licence at this time, ergo stand to make an incredible amount of money until the sole licence laps) in conjunction with a Government who have to be seen to be pro-active in preventative medicine rather than reactive and hey!!!, here we go, something that will earn the kudos amongst the masses.

5. Exposure to strains 16 and 18 (and anything else) increase with more sexual partners. Now even if you only have one partner you can come into contact. But I would much rather my daughter insisted on any partner using comdoms and if things got serious both her and partner were checked for std's at a clinic and given a clean bill of health prior to choosing a different contraception.

I think it should also be taken on board that males can also be offered this injection as protection against being carriers of the viruses but aren't getting this as it is women who are the ones who get the cancer. Just like although a successful male pill has been developed with fewer side effects than the female pill.
In my opinion these young women should be getting encouraged to practice safer sex rather than "yahoo, thats us o.k." again like it was when the contraceptive pill came out. I remember when I got to about 17 (nearly 30 years ago) and was encouraged to go on the pill by a totally uneducated mother (bless) who thought she was doing the right thing for me. She never knew the side effects and she hearself has since had major health problems associated with the very high dosage pils that were first brought out when she was young. But hey, in her days they all thought this was going to give them untold freedom.

I agree with some who think that this injection will promote complacency in young impressionable girls who will now think they have some kind of invincibility.

I would seriously want to see how this one was ging to pan out prior to my daughter being vaccinated with.....what???.

They say the side effects are minimal but the check list my daughter brought home would suggest this is not the case and some of the questions on the consent form practically absolved those involved in the vaccination process of any blame should there be any future problems.

Watching and waiting on this one.

Don't want my daughter to be a number where I feel propaganda and emotional blackmail is being used to promote a drug company and a failing Government.

Im 18 and I think that this vacine is good. They are giving this vacine to children as young as 13 because they arnt really going to be 'sexually active' at that age.

I have read that is is giving as 3 seperate injections over 6 months. If I get offered it at any stage I am definatley going to have it done.
