Hello,
I've had this nail problem for awhile and thought it was time to ask for help.
I've had a biting problem which thankfully i have managed to mostly kill, but the scars of it remain on my thumb.
My nail is gone and when it grows, it seems to start growing from the base of the thumb, if that makes sense. It looks nothing like the other fingers or normal fingernails.
Please advise
Thank you
Hi there Fallout  Welcome to HealhyPages
I'm not an expert, but will offer my opinion, as I expect others will too.
Good that you have decided to sort your nail problems out - and especially that you have stopped biting them. Well done! It's a big step to break a habit like that.
Unfortunately nail biting can cause damage to the whole area around the nail right down to the nail bed itself. Chewing the skin allows infections, not only bacterial but particularly fungal infections to take hold, and I suspect this is what has happened here. See here - where the medics have dreamt up a really fanciful Latin name for it!
It is not uncommon at all but one can become self-conscious about it. I suggest you go to the GP and ask him/her to find out which of the possible organisms are causing your problem and what is the best treatment i.e.get it tested.
Be aware that it may take many months to heal and grow out a fresh nail. So there are no quick fixes. The nail grows from the area at the base of the nail where the lighter 'half-moon' normally can be seen. You can also support skin, hair and nail growth with suitable supplements eg [DLMURL="http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=247&prodid=327&sid=0"]this one[/DLMURL], which, if you are short of any of them then the nails will struggle to recover well. Oh and remember to eat pleny of fresh fruit and veg with your protein! and get your whole body working well.
Hope you get it sorted soon and fixed in due course 😉 🙂
I agree with what you've said. I'm not a medical expert too but i"ll be glad to recommend for you to take biotin supplements 'cause it helps repair damaged nails. There are lots of biotin supplements available in the market but I suggest taking biotin from Hercules Vitamins. You can purchased online.
Nail Biting can lead to Nail Fungus
Hi! Nail biting is a habit that should be stopped as early as possible as it can lead to other infections. A common infection attributed to such habit is nail fungus or onychomycosis. Here, fungi inhabits the nail making it yellowish or brownish. It is brittle, thickened, chips off easily, cuticles may not appear, malodorous, appearance of chalky debris underneath, swelling and pus. It's not necessary that all those symptoms are present. For mild cases only the discoloration, thickening and brittleness is visible.
In the unfortunate event that you have one you can treat it with topical medication, oral tablets via doctor's prescription or laser treatment. It will depend on the gravity of the infection.
I suggest you go to a doctor/podiatrist to seek for professional advice. Try to check this site: . I hope I helped.

Base on my experience i think you should take biotin (also called Vitamin B7). Biotin helps nail to grow faster and stronger preventing nail brittleness. Actually i take a brand of Hercules Biotin, i just purchase at Hercules Vitamins Website.
