does anybody know that apart from scrubbing myself with some wire wool and a bottle of bleach, how to remove a fake tan?

i have been sporting a very fake tan since last wednesday, and this morning as i was washing myself, i noticed i resemble a blooming giraffe...brown patches everywhere! i've now got to dress like its winter because it is noticeable!

is there any way i can get the stuff off without removing several layers of skin in the process? i wash with a bath time version of a brillo pad, but its taking it off very slowly!

good job where i live the weather has been forecast as rain..[sm=rollaugh.gif]

Exfoliation is the only way apart from going for a long swim at your local pool - this is guaranteed to strip a tan (but usually only if you want it to stay put!!!)

This is what worries me about fake tans. We've been told that natural tanning is bad for the skin, but surely plastering oneself in chemicals to make it look like we've got a natural tan must be even worse for the skin?

Calla - your problem is a case in point. The stuff doesn't come off easily. What damage is that doing?

Patsy.

Superdrug and boots sell wipes/lotion for removing fake tan, exfoliators will help but it will still fade over time, i used a boots wipe when i got rather orange feet from a spray i used! it did work. Superdrug ones are cheaper i think!

OMG - I know how you feel -

I bought the St Tropez one because the chemist recommended it to me - God I was slagged for being orange for days - I ripped the legs off myself trying to use the fake tan remover I bought - it was expensive and did not work.

So - today 2 weeks later my feet are brown ?? cannot scrub them too well, with cracks on my heels where I scrubbed too hard, brown marks down the middle of my legs and rough skin and abraisions where again I scrubbed too hard - so In my honest opinion - although not attractive white is ok!

hi puredub[sm=wave.gif]

i know it's really wicked of me, but i couldn't help but laugh [sm=rollaugh.gif]!!

i reckon the chemist sold you st.tropez purely for sales reasons, as it is on the steep side!

i know what you mean about scrubbing away...think i lost several layers of skin in the process!

to help with the cracks-try smearing on vaseline then putting on a pair of socks before going to sleep at night-and after bathing/showering, use a body cream all over liberally to moisturise (any make will do) as that will lessen the roughness.

it's a nightmare fake tan...i've more than learnt from experience not to do it again!

hi hal [sm=wave.gif]

it was garnier's ambre solaire spray tan in light, another one i didn't go much on was the new johnson and johnson's holiday tan, but at least that one came off after a few days, as opposed to weeks with the other one!

RE: fake tan removal

I think the trick to getting a really good fake tan is to exfoliate and moisturise first.

I use the ambre solaire spray one and it's fine - no smears and it's not too dark or orange. I think it's really good.

I always wipe my knees, ankles and elbows with a baby wipe or damp cloth when I first put it on then you don't get dark patches.

hi crystalseer [sm=wave.gif]

i've been wondering the same, and if it weren't so darn expensive i would find out for myself!!

mind you though, the thought of stripping down to just a pair of paper knickers is a bit of a deterrent to me..[sm=rollaugh.gif][sm=rollaugh.gif][sm=rollaugh.gif]

RE: fake tan removal

know what you mean hon..... i also remember seeing the episode of friends when ross decided to have a go in the spray tanning booth and kept fogetting to turn around.. sooooo funny... but seriously.. i know someone who run a salon and they do say you have practically exfoliate every inch to get your skin slippy smooth or it goes patchy as well as rubbing like mad to make sure it doesn't leave "drip marks"... so anyone out there has had it done.. please tell all.. I would love to know.. I can't use sunbeds due to skin melanoma( soz spellin)..

RE: fake tan removal

Hi all,

Thought I'd wander over from the Beauty Forum pages as I couldn't help but contribute to this thread - spray tanning is my new "best friend" at the salon where I work! I'd always had real problems with the fact we have a UV tanning capsule at work, as I can't justify to myself selling a service that is ultimately harmful, so decided to get off my butt and do something about it. Fortunately fake tanning has come a long way in the last few years, but sadly it is still possible to go orange and patchy without a bit of prior knowledge... sorry for the long message, but I hope the below will help you all find a fake tan that looks great!

First, a bit of background info...! The most common ingredient which causes the fake-tanning effect is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone), which is a natural substance derived from vegetable sources (often sugar cane). It works by interacting with the keratin proteins in the surface skin layers (i.e. the dead cells - nice!) to produce a cosmetic colour change. DHA is completely safe on the skin as it only sits on the uppermost, dead layers - it cannot absorb past these surface cells into the dermis. This also explains why any fake tan, however good the ingredients and whatever a sales rep or beauty therapist tells you, is always temporary - the outer layers of our skin are constantly shedding and your tan will therefore only last as long as it takes for the uppermost cells to slough off. There are, however, ways to help your tan look good for as long as possible - hurrah!

As Sulis mentioned above, try to exfoliate really well and moisturise the day before you tan - this helps shift any lingering dead skin cells that could cause an uneven result. Don't moisturise on the actual day of your tan, as this will prevent the solution from penetrating and will make the final colour lighter - the exception to this is on knees, elbows, hands and feet, which tend to be drier and will often benefit from a splodge of body lotion for a more blended effect.

Most important to realise, is that fake tans come in different percentages of DHA - the more DHA, the deeper the colour... BUT fairer skins WILL go orange if the DHA% is too high. This is one good reason to go for a salon applied tan, where the therapist can pick the correct DHA% for your skin type - most shop bought products (including the Big Names) only have one % in their tanning solutions. Make sure your salon offers a choice of DHA% as you want to avoid being too dark, or even too light - a good fake tan will only require one coat for a nice, natural colour, and you can always choose to go even darker over the next week if you really want to.

In my personal opinion, airbrush/spray tans are the way to go. This is where the tanning solution is lightly misted onto the body, either by a therapist or an automated booth. Again in my personal opinion a therapist-applied tan is better than a machine; although it takes slightly longer, you are assured of no missed patches or streaks. There are a number of different airbrush systems out there, but the latest equipment will allow a therapist to have you sprayed, dressed and ready-to-go in 20 minutes. Because the solution is misted lightly onto the body, it won't drip or run (no streaks) and it will dry quickly (no sticky after-feel), although this does depend on what system the salon uses.

You will see an instant colour (this is a cosmetic bronzer only, which allows the therapist to see where they are going!), and your tan will then develop fully over the next 6-8 hours - so no exercise, swimming, disco dancing or generally getting wet until then!

To keep your tan looking lovely for as long as possible, the key word is MOISTURISE! Once the tan starts to fade after 4 to 6 days, use a loofah or nylon mitt to GENTLY exfoliate the skin and help prevent blotchy patches. If you look after it, the colour will last well and fade evenly, but the speed of fading varies from person to person and will be affected by things like swimming - your therapist will tell you what to

The other thing you can do I discovered is to have the offending bits waxed. I had mine done the other day, and it was quite interesting to see the difference between the brown and white bits afterwards, where the fake tan had been removed!

I really don't like the idea of plastering myself in chemicals to make it seem that I have a tan. I prefer real sunshine. As long as sensible precautions are taken, one cannot beat it. The Sun has lots of other health-giving properties too, such as raising seratonin levels and manufacturing Vitamin D.

RE: fake tan removal

Patsy, I completely agree with you about the delights of the sun - nothing beats soaking up the sunshine to lift my mood!

I guess my love of fake tans comes primarily from my wariness of high-intensity UV sunbeds, which in my personal opinion cannot hope to offer the same health-giving benefits of natural sunshine, only the damaging effects of the radiation. I just don't think the long-term effects of this are really worth a bit of temporary colour!

I can only speak for the fake tan system I use, but the only added ingredients seem to be aloe, glycerin, sweet almond oil, green tea (!), and lots of water! My understanding is that DHA has been approved safe for use on skin since the 1970's and is completely washed off once it has caused the natural reaction which "stains" the dead skin cells. I think it's also been used as an ingredient in cough-medicine, and believe it was used internally long before it's external cosmetic use was discovered.

However, I see your point and agree - I certainly wouldn't claim that *any* cosmetic product (whether completely natural or otherwise) can ever be 100% guaranteed not to react on some level with the skin. But, I certainly feel happier offering a fake tan to my salon customers than the alternative: handing over a token for a UV sunbed session. If I had my way, they'd be banned, but then I'd have a lot of very angry people chasing after me! I think Coco Chanel has a lot to answer for 😉

I use L'oreal. It's been good to me but sometimes I do have a lovely brown inbetween fingers look! I tried lemon juce and sugar. It's okay actually, but I don't think anything gets rid of it totally.
I'm going on holiday in two weeks and have v fair skin. I am using a tan accelorator for the first time. My boyfriend put some on then went to the sun tan beds (for 15 mins!) and turned into a lobster. He is in pain. I have not been on a sunbed. Am still trying to decide on my curse of action.

Hi Starrie

I'm not sure but I don't think you're supposed to use anything at all if your using sunbeds - quite dangerous! [:o]

I use tan accelerator (Elemis) for about 3-5 days before I go away, then use it whilst I'm away, after my evening shower, as a moisturiser. I have found that it really helps me tan.

I might add that I use P20 once a day sunfilter, which is brilliant - you just have to make sure you cover every bit of your body that will be exposed to sun but you really do only put it on once a day and you can swim as many times as you like!!! 🙂

Talking about self tans, i have noticed that johnsons holiday tan lotion, when its drying it tends to flake off, most disguisting. I do exfoliate before applying, Does this happen to anyone else, or do I have a dodgy bottle?

RE: fake tan removal

Hiya, i was reading this thread as i have just had the sae problem as you yesterday! I put the ambre solaire on and nothing happened on my mum we put a bit more on and when we got up the next day by legs were brigt orange and nothing had happened to hers! Odd! Well i had to go to school and have games tomorrow so i have been frantically trying to get it off this eveing and i have come up with my magic recipie for near success!!

THIS IS FOR LEGS ONLY AS I THINK IT MAY BE TOO HARSH ON OTHER BODY AREAS AND I DONT THINK IT IS THAT GOD FOR YOUR SKIN BUT AS A LAST RESORT IT IS GREAT!

1. Coat egs in johnsons baby oil gel and leave for 10 minutes then get into a hot bath
2. Use a gentle body scrub in the bath and remove oil and then t legs steam
3. put foam shower gel on your legs and leave for about 5 minutes then wash off.
4. When you get out of the bath pat legs till they are reasonably dry then take a towel and hold onto both ends and pull upwards pressing onto skin, you should see the tan sort of flake off.
5. Then exfoliate.
THIS IS THE NOT SO HEALTHY PART!
6. Get a razor and shave your legs despite how much hair is there. Do it several times until sking becomes dry. The exfoliate again and shave. Repeat as necessary.
7. Then wet som kitchen roll with hot water and wrap it round your legs and then peel off and dry with kitchn roll.
8. Finally exfoliate and shave again and add more baby oil gel and remove againafter a while.

Although it sounds horrible it works quite well for a last minute thing. I will be repeatig it again tomorrow morning before school to try and avoid embarrassment in a skirt for games!

Hope it helps someone
lots of love
Henrietta

RE: fake tan removal

Just thought I'd share my experiences.

I tried the Johnson's holiday skin - I went very patchy and stank like curry for days:(

I had my first salon spray tan done last month for my birthday. The colour was great but I had white patches in places particularly on my hands, which looked ridiculous so I had to even it out with foundation - yes, on my hands! Also, it didn't seem to take to my legs for some reason.
Thought I'd try again the following week, but still got white patches where the spray didn't cover me andone side of my face was lighter than the other, so again had to even out with foundation.
Other drawbacks I found was that in the shower I couldn't really press hard while washing as it came off so easily. I love to exfoliate, so couldn't do that or even use my back brush as it would all come off.
Lastly as it came off it tended to get patchy, and worse - my pores where still brown while I was white again which looked gross and I'm sure can't be healthy.

Anyway, not wanting to give up all hope I've just bought a palmer's tinted moisturiser as I'm a fan of theirother products so hopefully it'll be good.
