Hello! Since I was about 14/15 years old (19 years old now) I have had acne, it started on the face and has slowly over the past few years crept onto my upper back and shoulders and has now started to spread lower down the back (moderately) and a bit on my upper chest.

I am currently on some tablets, twice a day, one in the morning and one at night called ERYTHROCIN. I also apply some cream to my face, back, neck etc each night called AZELAIC ACID. Though the acne is not terrible I wanted to know if there was anything in addition to the above treatment to help get rid of it? I've looked into different cleaning products, currently I am trying Original Source products as I have been told they contain a lot of natural oils(will this help?). I also try to wash my back, chest and face with a sponge and water after any workout, anything which makes me sweat basically.

Because the Acne is not extremely bad I didn't want to be referred to the hospital to a skin specialist or anything along those lines, but will if necessary.

Many thanks.

Hi Duck

Acne is not the easiest thing to live with. You are probably doing OK with azaleic acid. Erythrocyn is an antibiotic. But that is not where I'd start! Acne is sometimes called diabetes of the skin and is often associated with poor sugar tolerance.

You need to make sure you are eating a good wholesome diet to supply you with all the nutrients your body needs to boost immune function - avoid anything that is processed (easier said then done, I know ;)). Have a look for example. You need a minimum of 2 fruit and 3 vegetable portions daily (75-100gms per portion of multicoloured, especially geen veg) - beetroot, artichoke and beans are good - quality protein but not too much red meat and oily fish 2-3 times a week (mackerel, herring, fresh tuna, sardines, or ocean salmon) to supply essential oils which help the skin cells function properly. Avoid margarine and fried foods which supply damaged fats. Avoid all white flour and rice (have brown), cakes, biscuits, white bread, etc. Sugar reduces immune function considerably and is best avoided altogether. Drink enough water - at least 1.5 litres daily to help flush out natural toxins. Snack on nuts and seeds. Dairy foods may also be causing problems and are best avoided. That is a bare minimum, but it's amazing how much difference the right food can make.

You need to take a good probiotic to help your immune function (80% of which is based in your gut) which needs the right bacteria to support it - try these. It is highly likely that the antibiotic will have upset the balance of your gut flora and the most important ones need replacing. You will need these for at least 2 months after you finish the antibiotic.

I would add vitamin C up to 3000mg daily and about 50mg zinc daily (do not have more than a total of 100mg zinc daily) - you can get some of this with orange-flavoured effervescent tablets available from a supermarket/chemist. Have it throughout the day. Many young people are short of zinc which is necessary for over 300 enzyme actions in the body including insulin function, and lack of this mineral often shows up as acne or skin problems.

Next I'd suggest you need to get some sunlight on your skin - 20 minutes daily without sunscreen. This is to help your skin make vitamin D. This vitamin is also essential to immune function and the sunlight will also help kill off the bacteria. If the weather is poor a supplement of vitamin D3 might be helpful.

If you don't like eating oily fish I'd take some essential oils like this one. The citrus-flavoured liquid is good. Also helpful would be vitamin E, and a quality general until the food has had a chance to build up your resistance again.

You'll also need to make sure your clothing and bedding is cleaned very regularly and if possible ironed to kill any bacteria remaining on it after washing. Change your pillowcase daily.

If you put all this in place it should be history in a very few months. But if at all concerned it is best to see a registered nutritional therapist who will sort you out and support you through the process.

Hi 🙂

The advise given regarding the diet is excellent and it really does work I have been following this diet and have seen improvement.

Try cutting out overly spicy food too and dairy is a no no! Try drinking Roobios red bush tea too, this is a great antioxidant.

To cleanse the skin on your face I would stay away from harsh chemical based face washes. Try instead mixing a third of fresh lemon juice, a tea spoon of sea salt and a tea cup of water in a non plastic container you can store in a cool place. In the morning, wash your face with plain water, then soak a cotton pad in the mix, squeezing out all the excess. Wipe this over your face in a downward motion. This will cleanse bacteria, and close your pores acting as an invisible barrier to grime. Do this before bed time too, This is also excellent for removing make up.

I hope this helps!
