My 25-year old son has seborrhoeic dermatitis very badly on his face. It is very distressing for him because his face gets bright red and scaly and then very flaky. He has metronidazole gel prescribed by the GP, which helps a bit for a while, but then it justs comes back as bad as ever - and he has been using this for years. Any suggestions for treating this please?

Hi
Not that I know what that skin condition looks like, but I am presuming there is a good chance this Indian home remedy will help it. It certainly has a very severe case of
Eczema-which looked a lot like you describe
trumeric+sesame oil in equal parts pasted over affected area.
May I Caution you that it stains easy and is bit cumbersome remedy but it works every time.
Use chick pea flour to wash it off after about an hour( keep it on as long as is possible).Chick pea flour is available in Tesco in Indian food deptt. The other name for it is "besan"
At night time last thing before bed put freshly squeezed aloe vera over affected area. Let it dry and sleep
Hope he gets sorted soon

That's a very interesting recipe jnani. Turmeric is antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiinflammatory and sesame seed oil contains omega 3 and 6 oils which will help heal the skin. The chick pea flour will help to cleanse it and the aloe vera is also healing and antiinflammatory. I must remember that. Many thanks for this. As you say the only disadvantage is that it is a bit messy and the turmeric can stain!

Metronidazole is an antifungal, and while it is very good, the yeast can become immune to it. There are other antifungals which should be alternated with it so that immunity doesn't build up. Another excellent natural antifungal is tea tree, but I would suggest it is used with care on reddened skin. The use of antidandruff shampoos for bathing/showering is suggested and care with clean towels, bedding, etc to avoid reinfection.

Meanwhile I would support his internal body with a good wholefood diet, suitable supplements and probiotics. In order for the body to heal itself it needs a good supply of suitable foods to give him the nutrients he needs including vitamins, minerals and essential oils. as well as phytonutrients which are only found in a wide range of multicoloured fruit and vegetables. May I suggest he gets hold of Solve your Skin Problems and Improve your Digestion which will give most of the answers he needs. The skin is an organ of excretion and if the gut is not working right then this often shows up in the skin. Equally if he is eating the wrong foods then it often shows up first in the skin. Modern processed foods are a serious cause of chronic illness and ill health because it is stripped of nutrients and full of additives and preservatives - not to mention pesticides :(.

If, after following the advice in the two books, your son is still struggling with his problem please make sure he sees a registered Nutritional Therapist who can help sort this out for him. It's not just getting rid of 'germs' on the skin - it is making sure that all systems of the body are functioning optimally, and then he will be full of energy, look super and feel good about himself. What more can a fellow want? ;):D

THANKS CAROLINE, forgot to mention drinking turmeric in warm milk night time is also part of the recipe...
1/4 of teaspoon in very little warmed milk- night time. ( little milk to gulp it down quickly, but if you don't mind the taste, have a cup ful, as I do occasionaly. In India they add root ginger with it- nice. its quite an acquired taste)
In layman's language they say in India "it cleanses the blood" It is extremely useful consumed this way... prescribed in Ayurvedic text

Thanks for the suggestions and I will try to persuade him to try the turmeric thing. I could only find toasted sesame oil in the supermarket - and I'm guessing that's not it? Also, how do you use the chick pea flour? Do you mix it with water or what?

It only need be done for couple of weeks and he will get on top of this condition.
Indian shops sell sesame oil. Or try internet.

Chick pea flour half a table spoon on hand just enough warm water to make a runny paste will wash better than a soap. Won't have a lther but leaves you feeling cleaner and fresh
