Hi, For a couple of years I have had very dark circles/bags under my eyes. I know why - because I stay up late! The thing is, unusually I never seem to get tired at the time I want to go to bed! I would say regularly I go to bed at around 11pm-11:30pm, and also wake up at about 7:10am on weekdays. Could anyone help with my unusual sleeping habits - I just want to feel more awake and get rid of these bags under my eyes!
Thanks, Joanne 🙂

Hi Joanne.

I have a 13 year old daughter who also gets dark circles under her eyes if she doesn't get enough sleep.

What I would ask you first, is what are you doing up until you go to bed? If you are using a computer before you go to bed, you will not get to sleep very quickly. I won't bore you with the way this works on your eyes and brain, but you do need at least one hour of screen-free time before your plan to go to bed to give your eyes a rest and your brain a chance to start doing its stuff that gets you ready for sleep.

Of course, there could be a hundred other reasons and hopefully you'll get some more suggestions.

Sleep tight!

Also consider your diet. Are you drinking tea/coffee/fizzy drinks with caffeine etc. in the evening? Are you eating large amounts of food before going to bed etc?

As Derek says, there could be numerous reasons, and it may just be a case of needing to stop getting involved in intense activities earlier on (e.g. facebooking, tweeting or whatever) and lay down in bed with a book to read.

Thanks for the help and suggestions 🙂

I do not drink caffeine, but I do drink tea - but wouldn't have thought it would make a difference. I dont drink fizzy drinks very regularly too. I do facebook an aful lot so perhaps this could be the problem? Also, i'm not the most interested person in books and reading, but I do know it makes me more tired - probably because I get bored? haha, I dont eat a lot either and should probably eat more to be honest!

Thanks for the advice on using computers before bed, I would say I must be on on my laptop for about 2-4 hours a day and usually in the evening since I have school in the day.

Well Joanne, Facebook appears to be the culprit!!

Your brain starts to send signals to the various systems in your body to prepare for sleep when your eyes receive less light. If you stay on your laptop until bed time, you haven't given this natural process a chance to kick in and so will take longer to fall asleep.

And boredom isn't necessarily the reason reading makes you sleepy! There is some evidence to suggest that the movement of your eyes from left to right over and over has a similar effect and makes you sleepy.

Find a book that won't bore you - go to your local library and borrow as many books as you can from the young adult section and I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy. Reading is a habit not always learned by young people today because there are so many other recreational activities assumed to be more interesting, but I've never known anyone who hasn't got interested in books if they really give it a try.

The other thing you could do is start a diary. When you go to bed write all about your day. Don't worry about not having anything very interesting to write - write down everything anyway: what you ate; who you spoke to; what you did at school; how you are feeling; what you thought about what you saw on television. It doesn't matter what you write, it's a great way of falling asleep.

Sorry to go on, but I know how important it is for you to get a good night's sleep and hope you do so soon!

I would recommend the Eyelastin because it is clinically proven and completely organic product to work and contains many unique features, including patent Nanoderm Technology. is manufactured by Dermagevity Skin Care which is based on the invention of product formulations that will harness scientifically verified ingredients and innovative delivery methods that reduce the presence dark under eye circles as well as accelerate the particular recovery of typical beauty imperfections.
