Hi all,

Just wondering if you can recommend any holistic treatments in the North London (preferably low cost) for me which could help me get over Chronic Fatigue/M.E. I have tried Chinese herbal medicine but doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Had it for about a year now and am in desperate need to get back to work!!!!

Would be grateful for any feedback:)

Hi,
I have had ME since about 2002 ish and it has been a slow process working out what works and what doesn't work for me. Everyone is different. I didn't find Chinese medicine or Acupuncture from the Chinese Dr any good, but a good friend with ME swears by her Acupuncture.

I have found excluding dairy and reducing other toxins very useful, so cutting down on caffeine and alcohol and giving up smoking has been extremely beneficial. Nutrition from good sources is essential, with a good plant-strong diet and high-strength vitamin/mineral/amino supplements (I can tell you more if interested). I supplement Vitamin D and vary other supplements like Magnesium. For joint pain, Devils Claw and Turmeric are good supplements. Mood and pain wise, I think 5htp and St John's Wort have saved my life. I have the mental strength to cope with the physical pain and attempt pacing/management etc. 5htp has been shown to have anti-inflammatory qualities as well as its influence on serotonin uptake. 5Htp will help you regulate your sleep pattern, which is very likely out of synch.

To keep the immune system strong, try Olive Leaf Extract. I've taken this every day since September and haven't had a single cold or flu in that time, whereas with ME I have fallen for any bug going in the past, especially during the winter where I also have SAD and a very low immune system. There's lots of info about Olive Leaf online, it really helps you fight infections and boosts your immune so you are strong enough to manage your health. In fact, OLE would be one of my desert island items! I also use Milk thistle when my liver feels compromised, as us people with ME simply can't handle toxins of any sort very well.

Holistic-wise, low-cost is an oxymoron, especially for those on benefits/sick pay. It makes me laugh that the allopathic world poo-poo ME sufferers when if we weren't ill, why would we turn desperately to alternatives? Why would we spend all this money? I have spent thousands and thousands on complementary therapies over the years. You have to find what's right for you. I agree that Reiki helps. I have also found homeopathy very useful. Actually, my homeopath is amazing, we spend a lot of time thrashing things out and she spends ages studying my case thoroughly. I partly think it is the consultation process of homeopathy that starts the healing. And it's far better than psychotherapy was for me.

I would arrange a consultation with a good, well-reputed Naturopath for Reiki healing and see what else they have under their belt that might help you. They may have Osteopathy, EFT, Kinesiology and nutrition advice that they can bring into the mix in your course of sessions, so that you only pay for the session, rather than the range of treatments.

I wish you all the best in your healing journey.

It just occurred to me that the pressure you are putting on yourself to get back to work may be stalling your healing. In my healing journey, I have learnt a lot about the bodymind relationship. Is your job keeping you happy in body, mind and spirit? I came to the realisation that my body 'broke down' because it couldn't go on labouring under the pretenses of my mind wishing to be in the rat race. My body told my mind to stop and rethink my life choices.

This may not be the same for you. I hope you find the path that works for you.

All the best.
