Hi all

I have suffered from perrenial (I think the name) rhinitis for years and tried steroid sprays before but they made it more blocked and I even lost my sense of smell temporarily.

I suffer with this runny nose all year round and seems worse when I use cheap tissues to blow it and also I sneeze constantly in bed as I suspect it is the dust mites.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can treat this? Any sprays or alternative methods?

I also have mild asthma and some alopecia areata which is slowly improving.

Hi Ms Moomin,

I really sympathise with you, i have suffered with nasal polyps for years, runny, completely blocked nose, sneezing etc. I also have asthma and allergic to many things, it's a nightmare!

But i have recently (after a sinus op) have been using a nasal rinse plus flixonase nose drops which seem to be working really well for me at the moment. The nasal rinse is a Neilmed bottle (which you can get in Boots) and you get sachets with it, but actually my ENT specialist said you can just use a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and salt (50/50 by weight) which is much better for my nose i think, you just mix it with warm already-boiled water.

It's worth a try - basically, douching your nose gets rid of all the gunk and debris that collects in the nasal cavity and may stop it being irritated as much (a lot of eastern countries have been using this method for thousands of years so it's well tried and tested!)

Hope you find something that works 🙂

HI

I'm new to this but I hope this helps you: you need a dehumidifier. They work wonders. Don't get a small one. Get one for about £100

Do you take any steps to rid your bed of dust mites? You can put your pillows out in strong sunshine to be sterilized. It takes three hours in hot sun. You can also kill the dust mites by putting your pillows into a hot dryer for awhile. You can vacuum your mattress, as well as vacuum beneath your bed. Washing all bed linens and covers once a week is very helpful.

Hi, I too have rhinitis all year round. I was told by my GP I would need a steroid nasal spray for life!

I tend to have a runny nose and sneeze a lot and also have itchy ears.

What I do is maintain it with regular hopi ear candle treatments, I too bought a douche jug thingy for salt water but only used it a few times. I also cut out dairy and have seen a vast improvement as dairy is mucous forming.

I still eat cheese and parmesan but only a few times a week rather than every day. I still use cows milk and cream on occassion but again not daily.

The GP told me that a lot of allergic rhinitis is to do with modern life, fitted carpets, double glazing, no chimneys, etc.

I live by a field and I have a dog, and am sure they do not help but am maintaining a lot better since I did the above.

when I started having hopi ear candles I had quite a few in a short space of time, now I just need them doing about 4 times a year.

I still have a drip drip at the back of my throat and sometimes sound like I've got a cold.
