Allergic to Sainsburys?

Hi all

Two days ago I was shopping in Sainsburys - I'd got about half way round when I realised that I was feeling quite peculiar: my nose had started running, my throat was closing and my head felt very tight. It occurred to me that I might be having an allergic reaction so I deliberately went to the cleaning section to see if that would make me worse, but it didn't. (Incidentally, I was quite gobsmacked whenI really took in the numbers of different type of cleaning products there are, all absolutely loaded with chemicals of course!)

I should perhaps say that I have never really suffered from allergies until last Summer when I noticed that I was sneezing more for no reason, especially when I am travelling thru the countryside. I subsequently read somewhere that more people are being sensitized to things and developing allergies. This must be what's happening to me.

Any comments?

Can't shed any light on what may have caused this, but had to laugh at the title of this post. I work for Sainsbury's and frequently think that I am also allergic to the place.....

Know what you mean about all those chemicals though. it concerns me sometimes that I have to handle all this stuff, especially when customers shove leaky bottles at you. [sm=aaarg.gif]

Hi sunanda,

it might not have been Sainsburys that you were allergic to. I get a reaction like that just by sniffing someone else's perfume. Perhaps there was a lady nearby with strong perfume on, and you reacted to that?

I can't wear perfume at all because of it, not even the expensive ones. Tch!

Love,
Patsy.

I founnd myself allergic to them all[:@]

Except Waitrose which have the softer lighting, white not yellow.

So you don't feel dizzzy after 10 mins.
And if you go in past 3pm most things are reduced:D

Hi Sunanda

This is not as daft as it sounds. Many people are developing health problems due to over exposure to chemicals. In fact I just saw an item about it on BBC News24 this afternoon! As you experienced the symptoms in all parts of the store, it might be a reaction to the cleaners being used to mop the floors rather than any particular product being sold. I also get headaches and dizziness after using certain cleaners and cannot wear perfume. I always use chemical free products and cleaners containing natural substances. If you want any more info please PM me.

It would be interesting to hear whether this problem persists when you visit the store again. If it does, I would point it out to the manager because you might not be the only person affected.

Now this is bizarre.

I have had 2 similar experiences in my local Sainsbury's to Sunanda. After I'd been in the store for 10-15 minutes or so, my eyes were itching like mad and I would have happily scratched them out to stop it. Plus, my nose was so stuffed up it felt as if it would explode, and I couldn't stop sniffing and sneezing. I was really confused, as I knew I didn't have a cold or anything, plus these incidents were at different times of the year too.

This may just be a coincidence, but I was quite alarmed at the time. Interesting!

Hi Memphis

Spooky, isn't it? I have been in again without anything happening, but I didn't spend too long in the store. I hate the idea that I'm becoming more sensitive to stuff; a few years ago I started being unable to wear earrings unless they were pure gold. For 25 years I'd been happily wearing any kind of earrings and now I can't even wear gold for too long without my ears getting sore.

Dear Sunanda
It is possible that you are sensitive to chemicals and if you wish to get any further information about chemical sensitivity try ringing Allergy UK. They have a Chemical Sensitivity Division that provides good information and advice - Have a look at their web site

[DLMURL] http://www.allergyuk.org/allergy_mcs1.html [/DLMURL]

It is sad that the medical profession do not recognise Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) which means you will get little help from your Doctor. Unfortunately more and more people are becoming sensitive to everyday chemicals. Good Luck.
Kind Regards
Lighthouse

Why thank you for this, Lighthouse. I shall certainly check this out. although luckily I haven't again suffered the same degree of discomfort in Sainsburys. I am becoming more and more aware of just how many chemicals we come into contact with from day to day...21st Century syndrome.

RE: Allergic to Sainsburys?

I know exactly what you mean Ithar - it gets to me like that sometimes too. I think it is a lot to do with the fact that there is so much negative energy around these places - basically no one really wants to be in there. Customers see shopping as a chore, that they have to put up with, and the staff, well I won't go into that, as I shall be here all day! Most fo the customers are great, but there is unfortunately a growing minority that think they can say and get away with treating the staff like s***.

Unfortunately because of this customer is always right mentality, most of the time, they do get away with it, msotly because the company fears that they will take their custom elsewhere. Sometimes I wish they would, and on my last day will be sorely tempted to say so!

I sometimes wonder how I have managed to stay there as long as I have. Still today I am celebrating though - as I am exactly halfway through my notice period, so have only 2 weeks to go. My boss thinks I shall be working until 10 pm on my last day - today though she is about to find out otherwise.

I have always felt a great dislike for the local Morrisons in our town - there's no windows!!!! Whilst I was pregnant, I couldn't step foot in the place without feeling sick - it did (and still does) have a particular aroma too. After Jack was born, it took me ages to go back there. The whole place just gives off bad vibes to me - despite their offers, I avoid it.

Our local Asda, on the other hand, is big, light and airy and they have a couple of Greeters on the doors who, although come out with some really corny jokes, lift the mood of the place. There's no nasty aroma either - there's always someone cleaning!

June. I'm sure you don't mind me owning up to that fact that I don't go in Sainsbury's - it's too expensive!

I'm not offended in the slightest Wendy, I won't be shopping there either after I leave. After all, why should I drive 6 miles to a place I no longer work at, and no longer gives me discount, when there is a Tesco a mile up the road?

No what you mean about the windows though, there are no windows in my store either - yet another thing to add to my list of hates!

I used to get dizzy and disorientated in supermarkets but I think that was more a panic attack issue, where you become overly sensitive to lighting and stimulus. Lisa x Can't say I particular enjoy supermarkets but Waitrose is my fave and slightly more relaxing than Sainsburys!

RE: Allergic to Sainsburys?

It could well be some sort of chemical your reacting too. Possibly something they use to clean the floors with?

May be you could ask someone in the store what they use to clean the floors?

One other problem could be the lighting.

I've had a number of clients that react to tube lighting.

lucky you

hello, i read your profile and your writings sound very interesting. even + interesting are your travels, and this mysterious islnad of Lundy in the bristol channel! Bristol, south england? that's where i live and i have never seen any island, especially like on that picture. looks like the Cornish coast or Brttany coast and islands...where is it? as i can get very very excited at the sound of a beautiful place somewhere (I am addicted to nature, but dont have the guts to go and live in it all year round).
