hi all i have posted thisbelow but thought i would post here as it may be read quicker/ i was wonderingof any online support for those who have an alcoholic in the family.Someone i care about is in this situation and not liable to go anywhere but i can see they are at the end of their tether and probably will end up on medication themselves to cope. The person with the problem is very domineering and so an online suport group or forum would be great for them. Thanks jane.

RE: alcoholic support?

jane,

i work with individuals and groups who are dependant on alcohol and other drugs, the problem with non face to face support such as forums, is there will be those who enter purely to be vindictive, these kinds of poeple can put those in or contemplating recovery, in a relapse and give a reason to fail.

if this person you have spoke about is ready to deal their addiction, then there should be no reason why they would not enter in to a local support network.

no matter how pretty we make the offer, if its not wanted yet, its not wanted.

im sorry you have to see some one you care about suffer in such a way, all you can do until they are ready is look after yourself and those who are being effected by the drinker.

dont hessitate if you need further advice, if you need information on your local support let me know what area you are in .

RE: alcoholic support?

Thanks for the reply .The person i think needs the support is not the alcoholic, the alcohol abuser will not go for support at the moment. The person needing the suport has found an al-anon group but they meet of an evvening only and this may prove difficult.Jane

RE: alcoholic support?

if your friend needs more support there are often local support groups in areas for families of people who use alcohol or drugs - al-anon is quite specific in its approach (its 12 step) and so can be really good for some people but isnt always right for everyone.
to get info on it you could either contact the local community drug team or the local DAT (drug action teacm).
Just to offer more options...

RE: alcoholic support?

Hi

Your friend could try this website, as it has forums & chat rooms for Al-anon members &/or those whose friends/loved ones are in active alcoholism/addiction:

All best wishes

RE: alcoholic support?

HI,I am a recovering Alcoholic & addict clean for 6 years.I am a member of many 12 step fellowships and was also broght up in alcoholic family.
In my experience people only get help when they really want it and all abstacles seem to be overcome to deal with problem when people really want a solution. That is anybody effected by alcohol directly or indirectly.People who are involved with somebody also has a part to play and some times when they get help it also encourages the drinker to get sober.
I tried many things to get sober and clean from a very serious and destructive addiction and i have found the only place people get a long standing healthy solution is in 12 step recovery programs.Good luck.
