What does everyone think about the new proposal to put flouride in our drinking water?? Shouldn't we have the right to natural drinking water with no chemicals? I haven't done much research yet but googled it quickly and apparently flouride was one of the ingredients in the atomic bomb?? I spend lots of money buying organic toothpaste which is safe for me and then they're going to do this???

Anyone have any views?

I wasn't aware this was a new proposal as it's something that came up years ago.

Are they trying to push for it again?

Do you have any links to current news stories on this?

I too heard on the radio today that Gordon Brown has announced that he is in favour of fluoridation. I just googled and got this link:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3018313.stm
but then noticed as I read that it dates from 2003 and I wondered if I was living out some kind of Groundhog Day!
But I also found this, which is current, http://www.inthenews.co.uk/news/health/fluoride-urged-water
so yes, it is true. And pretty horrifying I think.
Just as a by the by, a friend of mine who emigrated to NZ as a child has horrible brown stains on her teeth and that I believe is a by-product of fluoride in the water.

I just found this site which is against fluoridation (is that a word?) but I haven't read it yet:

We've already got flouride added to our water.:016: It doesn't seem to affect the taste but if I run a bath it can smell a bit bleachy.

As long as I can remember, we in the North have always had fluoride added to our water. The only time I notice it, it when the cold water is running and it has a slight bleach smell. However it has never affected the taste and if it does some good then I don't see a problem.

This is pretty terrible!!!

I must have read numerous articles over the years on the dangers of fluoride - all of them terrifying, but please look at this link for my latest.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2007/11/22/fluoride-damages-your-brain.aspx

My sons are age 27 and 22 and have never used fluoride toothpaste, and drink only mineral water. Their teeth are just amazing and free from fillings.

I made a point from their babyhood not to go near fluoride in tap water or toothpaste, and I don't believe it is the whole story, or anywhere near it, about tooth decay etc.

What really damages teeth is fruit juices and sugar. I also made sure their main drink was water, rather than any juice.

When will they ever get it right, and what will they do to us next?????

I am not sure that this is about teeth, after all most popular brands of toothpaste has fluoride in it and has done for a number of years and some of you seem to be saying that it has been present in your water for some time, do our teeth have less fillings? I think not, is this about allowing companies to carry on adding sugar etc, etc, etc to our food with the public message "not to worry, the waters got fluoride in it"
What me a cynic?!

I feel very uneasy about them talking about adding it to water in 'poor areas'. Seems a bit patronising. I can vaguely remember the debate when it was first proposed to add fluoride to the water - donkey's years ago it seems - I had no idea that it had crept in by default.

I reckon the politicians have shares in bottled water and they will make a mint when the sales rocket because no body will drink tap water:mad:.

They don't want to save our teeth. They want our money! Fluoride is a deadly poison. I won't drink it.

Do the water filters we have in the kitchen remove fluoride? I don't think they do, but theres a challenge for the manufacturers of these filters!

So, without one having to look up all the links, what's the basic story on this? Is it just a proposal and at that stage? Or is it certainly going to happen, and would that be to all of us?

These elite idiots just don't let up, and try, try, try again. The fluoride debate is one that's always ongoing. The chemical is used as rat poison for goodness' sake, and they want us to have it in our mouths? Currently some areas of the UK already have it, so many of us already have it in our water, folks; but other areas have so far opted out, so can they still do that?

It's not fluoride that makes water taste and smell horrible from our taps - that's the chloride which we all have (used in its gas form of chlorine to kill troops in WW I). As far as I know, you don't taste or small fluoride.

Research upon the effects of fluoride upon the whole body include one study of a Turkish town where they got all their water from a well, which had fluoride in it, in heavy doses, naturally from the ground. That town had hugely above-average instances of cancer, arthritis, and all manner of things. The population was or still is in a state of being decrepid or decades older in health than they should be. That's what fluoride does to anybody's body - along with all the obvious (to some!) things such as ruining teeth rather than saving them.

You beat me to that one V. Yes, to the best of my knowledge it's the chlorine in the water that smells of bleach and I can understand why chlorine is in there (although I do filter my drinking water to remove as much as possible). I also don't believe you will taste or smell flouride.

Late typo correction: I don't really know whether you can "small" fluoride or not, but you can't, I think, taste or smell it. 🙂

I trained as a Dental Nurse over 30 years ago and I was aware that fluoride was being added to the water even then. It was usually 1 part per million for the area (not sure what that meant but that was what we were told). The dentist I worked for would tell patient's to check if they were in a fluoride area and then if they were told them not to use fluoride toothpaste.

I am therefore a bit confused that this is being seen as a 'new' thing?
