i regularly read and post to a forum where women are trying to conceive or are pregnant etc. i want to learn more and also spread the word of the misinformation (IMO) of reflexology and therapies at this time.

anyway, i just was reading a post by a lady with PCOS (reflex can help, can it not?) and metformin. this woman tried reflex 3 times. 1st time she was told there was a blockage, 2nd time she was told she was ovulating, 3rd time was told perfectly fine, you'll get pregnant soon, no need to come back.

hmmmm i was quite shocked that a reflexologist would say this, after all, is anyone *perfectly fine*? i was surprised that she didnt advise bi monthly or monthly even, to keep the balance (and lend emotional therapy/ support) should conception not happen quite yet...

thoughts?

RE: Perplexed!

It's not the approach I would use myself Rosie! I don't think anybody can assure anybody else that they will conceive, but wouldn't it be nice if we could? Like you I'd look to treat the person on a regular basis and lend support while they were trying to conceive (I'm doing this at the moment with someone in a similar situation).

RE: Perplexed!

Hiya
Having worked on a fair few of these types of things (with two of my ladies about ready to drop in the next couple of weeks) I am as honest with them as possible which is paramount in this situation. If everything is feeling as it should then the therapist would in my opinion would be doing a disservice if she didnt report that back but at the same time you could also extol the benefits of reflex and hope that they would continue....the emotional support thing is a tricky one as that is not why we are there and are not qualified in that but more often than not end up becoming shoulders, ears etc so I wouldnt advise anyone comes back for emotional support as that is not my/our forte but would leave it up to the client....

Many people trying to conceive are willing enough to try anything and i feel if everything feels ok in the feet this should be told but offer to carry on balancing treatments to support what she is doing but thats it.

I shall get my coat now..

RE: Perplexed!

Women have problems with conceiving not just for physical reasons, but as we know, emotions, stress, etc can all contribute to difficulties. Therefore, just for the relaxation benefits alone reflexology can only continue to help the body prepare for pregnancy and hopefully conceive in the natural way.

RE: Perplexed!

i sort of worded that wrong... what i meant by emotional support/ therapy was the fact that reflexology works on the emotional/ energetic levels, of which i am sure those ttc have much going on.

i also think she should have explained the benefits of continueing re boosting immune system, balancing hormones etc etc... stress of course.

dont get me wrong, i applaud the reflexologist for *turning away* business. but i think she may have been a little misleading with her *prognosis*.

RE: Perplexed!

I would love to know how that reflexologist could tell all that!! Also, is the client pregnant now?? If so the reflexologist should give a course to us lesser mortals.

I totally agree about the program of treatment. I always stress to my clients that what I'm doing is to help her hormone balance and holistic health, rather than concentrating only on achieving pregnancy, it takes the pressure off them. It takes a while to help the periods regulate.

What is that website Rosie, it sounds really interesting. Could you ask that member how she is now?

RE: Perplexed!

hi jan,
no she is not pregnant yet and is desperate to be, hence trying reflex.

the woman had been having beauty treatments for years from this reflexologist and they have a good relationship (i had suggested she try someone else if they hadnt gelled). apparently she also offers reiki. after the 3rd session she said she didn't want to take her money for no reason, she thought the woman was fine, she suggested she try to stop thinking of ttc, and book holiday etc, she actually told her to stop coming on the web site, as it playing on her mind all the time.

she told the reflexologist that she enjoyed the treatment and wanted to keep coming an hour a week and she suggested a facial or something to relax (which is much cheaper than reflex) so she can't help but feel her best interests are being looked after. she's been asked to go back a week or so after her period.

RE: Perplexed!

oooh goodness Rosie - well I'm appalled ! 🙂
I simply cant believe a practitoner of any sorts would come out with something so insensitive to their clients needs. I'm no shrinking violet & often speak as i find - no messing but I dont think any DR, Beauty Therapist, Reiki master, Reflexologist - whatever qualification or any specialist in any field should tell their client/patient what they think the person is feeling over & above as a better guide/gauge than the clients own.
We can offer suggestions & plausible scientific, holistic reasons of whym how etc but to totally ignore a client & her thoughts opinions etc is - in my humble opinion of course - totally outrageous & wholly unprofessional. ie she thought the woman was fine !! hmmn okay but how did the woman feel ?
Plus - to totally ignore what her client said - ie she was actually telling her how she felt - "I enjoy reflexology and would like to come for an hour weekly" To then suggest what she thought would be better & cheaper sounds totally incompetent to me. Surely our best interest is our clients needs ! Perhaps she isnt confident with her application of reflexology & the benefits. Perhaps she believes more in her ability as a beauty therapist or others' ability to help her client - thus not charging ! Perhaps she didnt feel she was worthy.
Maybe her reaction is from lack of confidence, which thus may be fuelling her words.
But hey I am guessing !! with respect for the practitioner after all she must believe what she is doing ----- is right ! But the client obviously doesnt or she wouldnt be requesting second opinions.
I have treated many of my clients for nothing at times - esp if they've been going through hard times but I do believe & know I am worthy of my full price ( & more 🙂

Personally i feel that type of full on - telling somebody what when & how isnt helping the client find her own way to heal, resolve etc, being whom she should be, exploring all options & making decisions from her own experiences. To take away the clients responsibility towards their own health isnt good.
Hmmn I'm being totally outspoken Rosie ( as always 😉 but I dont think the client has her best interests looked after at all
To tell somebody to stop going to a web site that is full of information & support etc is a laittle harsh. I understand about the hols - i agree isnt a holiday great at anytime 😀 any excuse & if poss Id love to just stop & book a holiday as yes a change is as good as a rest !

Bless - keep up the good work Rosie - keep chipping away, we can all learn from education & updating - you'll get through to many but not perhaps all - nevertheless many will beneift from your knowledge & experience.

and breathe .. . . 🙂
PS - Hope you are all healthy & happy , enjoying life & all
wonderful offerings.

RE: Perplexed!

Pre has said it all!!!

Every therapist is there for the benefit of their clients and should NOT refuse to treat them unless there is a very good reason (eg a contra-indication or a threat to the therapist).

Having studied reflexology in relation to pregnancy and labour I can see every reason to continue reflexology through the time of trying to conceive right up to, during and past delivery.

RE: Perplexed!

thanks for everyone's comments.

i agree totally paul. it seems almost more important during preconception and certainly helpful on many different levels.

pre, yes, i wonder if the reflexologist in question doesnt have the confidence (my views re beauty and add on therpapies are probably no secret!).

trouble is, it doesnt help to dispel the misinformation given to women regarding therapies, reflex, for all pregnancy matters.
