Hello all,
Are there any practising art therapists out there or anyone who has had experience of this therapy? I'm about to start a 6 month art therapy foundation course. If it works out (financially and otherwise) I'm intending to go onto the MA in Art Therapy. It's a big career change for me, have been interested in it for years but haven't pursued for various reasons (lack of confidence etc. etc.).
Just wondering what it is like to do this for a job? Are the jobs hard to get and does anyone have any advice.
Cheers,
Mousex
Hi mouse and welcome. I am currently not doing this work but hope to train to become a play therapist so am having similar thoughts. i am also wondering the same things such as job opportunities afterwards. I haven't heard much sucesss for play therapists and a lot of people seem to do it as a part time business.
Hope you find some answers!
I am not an art therapist myself, but have a few friends/colleagues who have been trained to Masters level in art therapy - from what I understand, there are not many jobs around, and these people are now mostly working in other occupations.
When I was employed in a women's prison, we did have an art therapist there part-time, but in general these jobs seem scarce. Hopefully this will improve though, as the art therapists are one of the first that are recognised by Health Professions Council, so hopefully the status and appreciation of this field will grow.

Hmmm... it's taken me ages to figure out that this is what I'd like to do. Will keep going with plans and hope for the best!
