Hello everyone!

I'm a new member and I was just wondering if anyone could let me know if they've had any experience with the British Institute of Homeopathy - either the Irish branch or any anothers. I'm looking into retraining in an area of interest (not sure which one yet) and was thinking of doing their basic homeopathy course with a view then to moving on to others subjects as my knowledge/curiosity increases.

Any feedback that you could give me would be gratefully received, I don't want to end up spending money on a "bad" course that could be spent on a good one!

Hi, never having done one of their courses, I can't speak personally. However, it probably depends on what you want to do, after the course.
If you may want to practise homeopathy, you really need to do a course that's recognised by the Society of Homeopaths or at least some other smaller regulating body so that you can also register with them after the course, which is a normal expectation for a practising homeopath. Generally, the courses are 4 years long and include for example, a certain number of hours of supervised clinical experience. It's hard to see how an online course could satisfy that criteria.
You could I suppose, do any course, in a complementary therapy and set yourself up as a therapist, but it's not really the best way to go. There are other issues to consider, like insurances, legal advertising ......you really need the support of a regulating body, if you are going to practise properly.
You might want to check the Society and see what they think about the course and also check local colleges and uiversities if you want to consider the in-depth course. I agree with you- you don't want to spend lots of money and find it's not what you want. It might be that a cheap 'first aid' course or 'evening class' would provide enough info for you. Hope this helps but PM me if you want any more info. Hom

Hi hom, thanks a million for taking the time to answer my query, much appreciated.

The BIH does say that the course I'm currently looking at (an online one) is simply an introduction to their diploma course (3-4 years long) and the longer course does include clinical experience. They're actually based quite near to me so I would be able to avail of their summer school, lectures, clinic etc. They're the only ones in my area offering an intro course (I've completed first aid courses in the past, mostly focused on workplace accidents) into homeopathy, and they also say that they help students find good insurance once they've passed the diploma course. They do list off a lot of various societies that they are accredited by but I guess I'm just wary of doing a course that won't stand to me in the long run, I'm out of work at the minute so everything I do has to have a serious career prospect at the end of it, I can't afford to play about!

Homeopathy Training

Agree with Hom re quality and duration of training re this discipline - I think there may well be a course running in Dublin area which takes the form of a weekend typically once a month and which is of 3 or 4 years duration - a similar course which I believe was run by the same organisation did operate briefly in the North of Ireland
