Hi all, I have been contacting residential/dementia care homes in the area offering pamper sessions and have had quite a lot of interest/bookings recently. I offer file and polish, hand and arm massage and seated back, neck and shoulder massage to the residents. I am in the process of compiling my client record sheets and contraindication check lists, risk assessments etc. and just wondered if there was anyone else that had taken this route and if so would really appreciate some advice and feedback. Will let you all know how it goes next week....so looking forward to it as the residents, I'm sure, will really benefit from the treatments. xxx
Good luck with this, let us know how it goes, can you come and practice on me when you have time please...:)
Hi Bevhud
I recently went on a one day course on 'massaging clients with dementia' and found it useful. In fact I booked in a dementia client (in her own home) just afterwards. Doing the consultation wasn't the easy but just did my best, and wrote additional info later as the client remembered stuff like hip operation etc. Hope it is going well for you.
Best Wishes

Just wondering if you have started this yet?
I really love Dementia care. With my experience, some clients prefer a different type of touch.
Once i had worked with a client who as greatly agitated and confused. In that situation, his body became stiff and he was almost like he was going into an attack. He would also scream loudly. In the first session, he started counting numbers out loud. I could know the rhythm of his counting and started counting out loud with him. When I did it, my one hand was on his upper chest and gently tapped there with the counting. I found that the counting and the touching made him calm down. For about 30 minutes, we counted out loud. I could experience his breathing slowed to normal and his body relaxed. I was happy that both my voice and the measured touching had a good effect on him. Gradually, he fell asleep.
