Hi everyone

Yesterday a taxi driver (driving me to hospital for my MRI scan) mentioned 'SHEN' saying that it was very good for back problems. She spoke of her own neck pain, and that of several friends... who see someone way over the other side of town. I did a search on HP here and there doesn't appear to be anything on it.

The governing organisation () tells me a fair bit about what it is. I'm wondering if anyone here has had any experience with the therapy, and whether it is something you'd recommend? I am having osteopathy as my primary therapy for my back, but am wondering if SHEN might be a useful adjunct?

What do you think?

Thanks!

RE: any anecdotes about SHEN?

Hi

I know some SHEN practitioners - one of whom is also a Reiki healer and sees not much difference between the two healing modes. Another friend of mine is training in SHEN and attended several workshops and is now under supervision and can practice - all of the case histories must be gone over with the supervisor. The training is over a long period of time and supervision is costly annually - I heard the figure of several thousand pounds.

I personally have not tried it myself - but will let you know if it relieves any aches and pains of mine once I have given it a go.

Hi Binah

"but will let you know if it relieves any aches and pains of mine once I have given it a go."

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. And thanks too for your comment that it has lots of similarities with Reiki. I noticed that the training costs (from the SHEN website) were very expensive. So clearly there must be a lot more to it that just being-like-Reiki. If only I knew what that was!

RE: any anecdotes about SHEN?

Hi

OK my knowledge is a few years old...

My anecdotes: I had a few regular treatments (ooh, 2000, 2001) and a couple of times I went home and bawled my eyes out - and didn't even know the reason. Release of emotional stuff going on, which is why I was having the treatment.

Also, once after a treatment I became aware several hours later that my coccyx was SORE. This was pretty interesting as the last physical trauma we had been working on was a fall in the playground onto my coccyx about 20 years earlier. Believe me the soreness was comparable to after this fall, nothing had happened to me to cause this discomfort at the second time I felt it. The SHEN thery was that it had released the remains of the trauma that was stored in the body.

The idea behind SHEN ("Scientific Human Emotional Nexus") is that the therapist uses their own bioenergy flow to reinforce the client's bioenergy flow. In an area where the body has stored trauma (physical, emotional, mental) this will assist the client's body to release the trauma.

So no, SHEN is not really like Reiki.

I did the first part of the SHEN training about 5 years ago. For my own healing rather than with a view to becoming a therapist. At the time there was a Reiki healer on the course, she said it didn't feel the same. I didn't do Reiki for another 4 years, but I'd agree.

Myself and other fellow course attendees had a lot of old emotions (etc) come up during the course. Physical pain isn't necessarily just caused by physical issues.

About 3 years ago there was a split in the SHEN community and now there is Kairos therapy as well. As I understand it (and this is only my impression), the Kairos people wanted to move the therapy forward, adding new knowledge that had been learnt, and the SHEN people wanted to keep it "pure". So the basic modality and beliefs about how the therapies work are the same, but the two will diverge more with time.

neukoln, I don't know what you believe and I don't want to sound "Weird and New Age", but maybe the taxi driver was "in the right place in the right time" to help you - maybe listen to him and

DO GIVE IT A GO!

Writing this, I'm rather feeling that I will have to look into it again for myself. You Scots have a far denser population of SHEN/Kairos therapists than we do in the south of England.
If you PM me I can give you the Edinburgh contact for Kairos, not that I care which you try 🙂

Hi Growingflame

I really appreciate your reply, especially since you took a risk and were quite open about what it did for you... I'm grateful for that.

"neukoln, I don't know what you believe and I don't want to sound "Weird and New Age", but maybe the taxi driver was "in the right place in the right time" to help you - maybe listen to him and"

I've been off work now for 5 weeks with this back injury... well, it just 'appeared' I didn't actually injure it as such. I have been trying to learn something from this, and feel that it must have come for a reason. I'm trying to work out what that reason might be. Whilst I was reading your reply I thought the same as you've said above. I'll give her a call tomorrow.

Thanks so much. I'll PM you with how it goes.

Hey neukolnn, thanks for reawakening my interest in SHEN:D
Would love to hear how it goes for you, give it a few visits.

I had an excruciatingly painful (couldn't sit down) lower back problem 2 years ago which was mostly an emotional issue - a perceptive friend pointed that out.

Although a chiropractor sorted it out, it wasn't with much manipulation; she used an emotional release technique I don't even know the name of...miraculous.

Anyway, sounds like I'm preaching to the converted - you aren't resistant to the idea that it's not just due to a physical problem.

SHEN is likely to help, but as you recognise the "happened for a reason" you might also try other "modalities" if you can access / afford them - Reiki is helpful for anything, for example.

I think I'll go and see a SHEN practitioner again when I have a few notes to rub together! THANKS!
