I have recently completed an ear candling course and mentionned to my husband that I was going to use our 11 yr old (with his very enthusiastic agreement) as aguinea pig - I mean practice patient...

My husband is not very happy with this idea and despite my reassurance that it is safe and will be beneficial to him. I am now starting to doubt myself - can anyone reassure me about this and I would be very interested in any evidence or articles I can show my other half.

Thanks 🙂

RE: Ear candling and children!

Hi

I did an ear candling course last June and was taught that it was ok to treat children over the age of 7. As long as they don't have any of the contra indications i.e grommets, inflammation , perforated ear drum then it is safe. Mind you, i did wonder where they plucked age 7 from. Maybe because any grommets may have fallen out by then. MMmmm i wonder if anyone else can help with that one

Hi,
I did an ear candling course about 5 years ago, and have treated my own son, now aged 10 several times, he gets very waxy ears and it does seem to help. I also see quite a few children with glue ear and the like and have had no problems at all. As long as there isn't grommits in place or any of the usual CI's. They normally enjoy the treatment and sometimes fall asleep. I've never had any problems with them wriggling or saying they don't like it. I'm sure your son will be fine and enjoy it. Just tell him what it is will happen and try the unlit candle in his ear first, so he knows what to expect. You can always take it out at any time if he doesn't feel happy about it. Maybe even put a mirror up so he can watch what's happening?
Good luck. You only need to do a few people to get your confidence up.

I recently did the Ear candling course with Andrew Sceats who advocates working with children as long as they have none of the contra-indications (such as grommits) and are happy for you to do it and will remain still whilst you do so, and said they can in fact be the best to treat as have no preconceptions and so benefit greatly from it.
I certain intend to work on my friends children if and when they request it! :0)

The youngest I have treated was 7 years. I think the main factor is if the candle will fit in the ear canal although I would not like to treat younger because of the delicacy of the ear. I have also treated an 8 year old and an 11 year old. The 11 year old had bad sinuses and found it really helped.

thanks for your replies!

He has been really looking forward to it but since backed off slightly when he saw a picture on the internet of a flame!

You would really think he would trust mummy wouldn't you?

Have never heard of a minimum age and in fact used my nephew, who was four at the time as a case study with no problems - three years later he still asks me for a treatment.

I did the TAHt course a few months ago, I used my 4 year old son as a case study, he really enjoyed the treatments. Never heard of a minimum age being 7, infact my tutor said it was safe to use on babies from 3 months upwards.
I would have no worries about treating this 7 year old.
Good luck.

i do both my children aged 9 and 11 and have done for a couple of years now.
my tutor didnt mention an age but said to use half the candle for each ear. two reasons firstly because they were young and secondly its not as long for them to lie there. mind you my daughter loves it and will lie and be pampered all day if she can!!!

I qualified recentley with TATh, we were told that under no circumstances do you only use 1 candle. A new candle should be used for each ear, understandably some children will not lay still enough for enough time, but to achieve the max benefit it's good to use a whole candle in each ear.
I do my son infront of the tv then i find he is quite happy to lay still if he has his fav programme on!
Although i understand all children are different.

My son who is 4 had his ears done last week with a small cone candle. He needs them doing again tommorrow and i felt that i would use a normal size candle and just cut them down so less burning time untill he is used to them and then i will go for the full size as he gets used to them. x what do you think of this?

My youngest son was one of my case study victims when I did the ThAT course 5 year ago - he was 8 then - he loves the therapy and frequently requests it just for relaxation when it's his "turn" for a therapy (we have a family rota). He often falls asleep within a few minutes of starting and I have a photo of him receiving a treatment in my therapy room to demonstrate it. I DO myself with the aid of a mirror and he will help me with that (- he'd like to do it completely for me but I'm afraid I prefer to hold it myself and have the mirror! - not very trusting of me!) Perhaps if your son sees you doing yourself or someone else he might be more enthusiastic - perhaps hubby will have his done if he doesn't think you should do your son?!!

I did a course in ear candling last year and two of my three kids love having it done. My daughter who is three now doesn't sit still for five minutes and is a bit neurotic about having her ears touched as she gets eczema in them but she falls asleep if I treat her. I use Biosun candles so they take quite a time to burn down. My eldest is five and gets very waxy ears, I think as a residue from the glue ear he had as a toddler. He never had grommets fitted so he isn't contraindicated. My tutor basically taught me that anyone is old enough as long as they can sit still! Needless to say I haven't tried doing my eighteen month old yet, and I don't think I will be for a while yet.

Take care.
