Now at last medical science is proving what some of us already knew. This article from the BBC is excellant however, they will not inform us of the 2 oils that stop these life threatening diseases dead and the 1 oil that has a slower effect.

Yet again money is being put before our lives!!!

I would love to have some feedback from those of you with Aromatherapy knowledge.

When I went into hospital for a major operation, I took in with me a bottle of tea tree oil and a bottle of high altitude lavender. I dripped these neat down my wound from the operation as soon as I was out of the operating theatre and coherent enough to hold a bottle. My toiletries were all tea tree based.

The nurse said that my scar was one of the cleanest she had ever seen and the wound healed very quickly.

I passed my bottle of lavender around my ward and had the women hooked. They were asking their husbands and families to bring them back bottles of it because of how it was making them feel.

I had them putting it over their pillows at night and showed them how to use it correctly.

So after reading this article what essential oils to you believe are the 2 that totally killed the MRSA and the 1 that slowed them down?
I know that tea tree is definately 1 of the main ones.

I now use Neem but is this known as an essential oil?

What are your stories and thoughts?

My mum is having a major op in a private hospital in Jan because she is so scared of catching MRSA. Im pleased this article has come out because my family think that Im away with the fairies when I tell them the benefits of essential oils :o)

Love

Aromatherapy oils 'kill superbug'

The oils are more usually used in aromatherapy
Essential oils could kill the deadly MRSA hospital 'superbug', scientists have claimed.
University of Manchester researchers found three of the oils, usually used in aromatherapy, destroyed MRSA and E.coli bacteria in two minutes.

They suggest the oils could be blended into soaps and shampoos which could be used in hospitals to stop the spread of the superbug.

Hospital-acquired infections, such as MRSA, kill an estimated 5,000 a year.

The Manchester study was triggered when complementary medicine specialists at Christie Cancer Hospital asked university researchers to test essential oils.

Our research shows a very practical application which could be of enormous benefit to the NHS and its patients

Jacqui Stringer, Christie Hospital, Manchester
They wanted to ensure they could not harm the patients, whose immune systems are weakened by the treatments.

Dr Peter Warn, who carried out the research, said: "When I tested the oils in the lab, absolutely nothing grew. Rather than stimulating bacteria and fungi, the oils killed them off."

Soaps and shampoos

The team then tested 40 essential oils against 10 of the most infectious agents found in hospitals, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus).

Two of the oils were found to kill MRSA and E.coli almost instantly, while a third was found to act over a longer period of time.

However, the researchers say they are unable to reveal which oils carry benefits because of commercial sensitivities.

MRSA is often carried in patients' nostrils, and is currently treated by putting disinfectant on the area to kill the bacterium - which many patients often find unpleasant.

Dr Warn says the essential oils could be used to create much more pleasant inhalation therapies - which he said were likely to have a much higher success rate than the current treatment, which is only effective in around 50% of cases."

Dr Warn said: "We believe that our discovery could revolutionise the fight to combat MRSA and other superbugs."

But he said the team now needed around £30,000 in order to continue its research.

Jacqui Stringer, clinical leader of complementary therapies at Christie Hospital in Manchester, instigated the oils research.

She said: "Our research shows a very practical application which could be of enormous benefit to the NHS and its patients.

"The reason essential oils are so effective is because they are made up of a complex mixture of chemical compounds which the MRSA and other superbug bacteria finds difficult to resist."

The Department of Health evaluates products which are claimed to prevent or treat HAIs before it permits them to be used across the NHS.

I made up a solution of tea tree oil when my father in law became a carrier of MRSA when in hospital. I also believe Manuka Honey on the wound is very effective.

Incidentally, I remember getting some very useful advice from Jackie Stringer when I wanted to treat my mum with aromatherapy when she was in hospital having chemo for leukaemia.

RE: Essential Oils kill MRSA & Ecoli: Scientific fact

Hi All

There has been a great deal of research in Australia with Tea Tree and Australian Sandalwood and MRSA with some promising results. I was involved in a programme with MRSA and Tea Tree (the only essential oil the private nursing home had heard of) and we found that 12% dilution seemed to work the best. Unfortunately due to one of the key workers involved in the programme being off work for a long period of time (due to an accident) the programme never was completed and so the long term results were not verified.

I have also heard that Thyme Linalool (Sweet Thyme) is supposed to be great against MRSA as well.

Out of interest I advise (and used in a major op of mine) Tea Tree neat of the soles of each foot (5 drops on each foot daily) immediately after the operation and for 7 days after as a preventative to MRSA and so far no one has contracted this super bug.

Wild Lavender is great to help heal wounds as is Helichrysium and my scar (about 14 inches long) healed in 3 days with very little visability (especially now 6 years on). I also used a variety of other essential oils to aid my recovery and for pain management and therefore didn't need conventional drugs of any kind. The nurses and consultant was very impressed and said how nice it was to come into my room as it smelt so nice. My experience was so positive that I documented it all (self case study) and now advise many people on both post operative and after care.

Never under estimate the power of essential oils

Love and light

Never under estimate the power of essential oils

I used neat Lavander oil to help against scaring after my operation & Neroli to help prevent burning when I had radiotherapy treatment...and it worked a treat...
still use now and again to pamper myself with but in a cream base:)

Hi Storm,

Lavender oil is one of the few oils that are gentle enough to be used neat on the skin. It is part of my "first aid kit". God against burns, it helps wounds heal faster but is also is antiseptic (so less chances of a wound closing over some remaining stuff that will start infecting. But I do clean with water first of course!).

Yes T Tree is one of the oils they are talking about. It has been researched.

Of course as it can't be taken over by the drug companies then I don't suppose the NHS are interested.

I wonder if Ravensara would be one of them? What do you think Sharon?

This information is only really surprising to those who stick rigidly to conventional medicine. If they bothered to even think for a minute then they might put two and two together and realise that all the drugs that are available today are copies of nature's natural medicines.

Ah well, it least we all know that essential oils work. Thanks Aurora for the info.

RE: Essential Oils kill MRSA & Ecoli: Scientific fact

Hi i am new to the forum and felt the need to sign up just to post this infomation.
I searched a long time to find any kind of info on essential oils that help fight the MRSA bug.

Researchers from the University of Southampton have found that adding essential oils, like eucalyptus, orange and thyme to candles can destroy bugs.

A study by two orthopedic surgeons has revealed that two commonly used essential oils can combat the potentially fatal bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Dr Eugene Sherry and fellow surgeon Dr Patrick H. Warnke found that an antibacterial wash made from Eucalyptus radiata and Melaleuca alternifolia (eucalyptus and tea-tree oil) cleared MRSA infections in 22 out of 25 (88%) study participants. In addition, of those whose treatment was successful, just three patients (14%) also needed antibiotics. According to Sherry the results of the study were made all the more promising by the fact that 40% of the patients involved in the study were diabetic, a condition which is known to impair wound healing.

I have recently had a major operation and made up a blend using
German Chamomile
Tea Tree
Lavender
Thyme
I diluted oil in about 5 mls brandy then filled up with witch hazel and distilled water and used as a splash after showering or bathing, my wound has healed beautifully and it has only been 3 weeks.
I hope this has been helpfull
Peace, Light and Love
