Hello,

I'm thinking of a long weekend in Norway, has anyone been there?

I'd like to stay away from the big cities and stay somewhere in the beautiful countryside. I know there is lots of info on the www but wanted to have first hand info from someone who's has been there, done that, got the T-shirt etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a nice location/place to stay?

Thanks.

Hi nk,

I've stayed in Oslo and Geilo

Oslo is fantastic for a city break, great for modern art. The Viking and Thor Heyerdahl museums are a must. The Great thing about Oslo is that it's a compact city and therefore easy to get around.

Geilo is Norway's big Ski resort, but still a fantastic place to go in the Summer with it long days and mountains. You can catch the train from Oslo to Geilo and it takes 2hours.

If you arrive a Thorp airport via Ryanair, you can take one of the regular buses in to Oslo.

HTH,

Myarka

I only stayed in Oslo a couple of times when I was teaching some courses there over the last year - it is a beautiful city but if you want to be somewhere in the country, I believe the north is absolutely breathtaking (the fiords etc). Some of my steudents come from Bergen so I could may be ask for recommendations - on the other hand, there is a great website, , where I get most of my travel info when I go to a new place - there are numerous blogs and recommendations of places to stay from thousands of travellers.

One thing to note - Norway is extremely expensive!!! Unless you are prepared to splash out, take some food supplies with you 🙂

Norway - take ££££'s!!

It's a few years since I visited Norway, and then it was a three week touring holiday from Oslo up to the Arctic Circle and back. Can't help much with advice for a weekend break other than to confirm what has been said already - it is expensive, especially for food (meat mainly) and fuel. It is nonetheless a beautiful country, enjoy your trip. I'm now quite jealous as my memories flood back 😀

Many things are expensive, if you're used to drinking booze. I didn't find the food all that expensive as long as you're happy to eat fish and elk. The museums and art galleries aren't that expensive, and public transport is affordable.

If you want to hire a car then yes costs go up, so IMO Norway is a cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. The only negative I found with the country was the airport security, but that's another story.

Myarka.
