RE: Sun noise
Re water, so right, Giles! When underwater I can hear the motors of boats as if they're about to hit me. So for safety I get to the surface for a look, and they are a mile away!
BTW I thought before it was too bad a pun, given Patsy's leaning, to say "What? Astronauts need a medium to communicate in space?"
RE: Sun noise
Well this doesn't sound much like a science forum to me.
RE: Sun noise
seraphsleeping,
We scientists are a humorous bunch, even though our 'press' says we aren't! We're not 'all formulae and hard maths.'
Why don't you begin a thread of your own?
Patsy.

Well.... What is science?
I though talking about sound travelling through a vacuum etc. was quite scientific myself. 😮
Some of us are also a mixture of science, art, spirituality and other things, so it's good that we aren't all just hard-core scientists. 😉

RE: Sun noise
right, I will try and do the boring task of copying some passages from my amazing book (complementary therapies in context/the psychology of healing by H Graham):
in reply to the concept of "empty space and sound":
"The General theory of Relativity completely abolishes the concepts of absolute space and time. Not only are these measurements involving space and time relative, but also, as the whole structure of space-time depends on the distribution of matter in the universe, the concept of empty space loses its meaning. Moreover the upheaval in our understanding of the universe demanded by relativity theory doesn't stop here.
(I don't like copying...hope at least 1 person is reading this!)
Time and energy.
A fundamental postulate of realtivity theory is that of the laws of science should be the same for all freely moving observers, (...)E=mc2: mass has energy and energy has mass (...)according to this formulation any distinction between energy and mass has to be abandoned. Mass and energy are simply different manisfestations of the same thing, mass being a bound form of energy. Mass is no longer associated with a material substance and is not seen as consisting of any basic "stuff" but as bundles or "quanta" of energy...
the Quantum description of reality
Newtonian physics is based on the concept of solid material bodies moving in empty space. This idea is so deeply ingrained in Western thought that it is extremely difficult to imagine a physical reality where it does not apply.(...)
When Rutherford split the atom in 1909 it became clear that atoms are nothing like the solid onjects conceived by Newton but are vast regions of empty space in which extremely small particles - electrons - move around the nucleus, bound to it by electric forces. The distinction between matter and empty space finally had to be abandoned when it became evident that particles can come into being spontaneously out of the void, and vanish into it again; "the vacuum is far from empty. On the contrary it contains an unlimited number of particles which come into being and vanish without end" "
I will sum up the rest: subatomic particles make discontinuous jumps (quantum leaps), they have no meaningful trajectory but an abrupt and unpredictable motion...matter doesn't exist with certainty at definite places, rather matter "tend to exist".
the holographic universe:
each part of the hologram contains information about the whole and if the hologram is broken into pieces each piece will reconstruct the whole image.
Bohns' theory is that what is movement, and that the explicate order - the world of manifest reality - is a secondary derivation from the primary order of the universe. Hard reality is an abstraction from the "blur" of basic reality, a notion long held by mystics and sages : "Life and all that lives is conceived in the midst and not in the crystal. and who knows but a crystal is a mist in decay."
I will stop on this last quote, which I think makes you wonder....also in the book the author describes some New Physics trials on the brain...and that the eyes do not see, the brain somehow sees colours even with eyes closed...and that hallucigenic drugs can access the Hard Reality, as well as meditation. gosh, that makes you wonder, next time I am offered some magic mushrooms........!!😉
