RE: inteligent design
Hi Rosie,
Life on earth - ah! Yep, a miracle if one considers the apparentbarren-ness of the Universe, but it evolved due to:
The Earth's distance from the Sun.
The presence of volcanoes and lightening.
The presence of oxygen, carbon dioxideand hydrogen in the early atmosphere, which in turn, created water.
Amino acids.
The presence of the giant planet Jupiter.
A proven theory? The theory of evolution is no longer a theory. It's a proven fact that life evolved, and is still doing so. Life evolved within and according to the laws of nature. I think God did have a hand in it, but it wasn't done outside the natural laws.
What about your miracles, which take place outside natural laws? Which ones are they?
Patsy.
RE: inteligent design
Hi Patsy,
If God had a hand in evolution, then to me it means that God can make or stop anything from happening. In other words, it happens coz God wants it to. In other words, there's nothing natural about evolution. Evolution would be the way in which man "explains" the working of God's Will. I don't know if you'll follow me... I mean that God prompts things to move in certain directions, not others. So evolution is nothing much to do with a natural Law - it becomes a Supernatural impetus, and can even be quite against natural selection.
I reviewed a book earlier today but the review is pulled. That was a book anti the whole idea that man, at any rate, evolved naturally. If homo sapiens did evolve, it happened mighty quickly?
I'm not sure what you are asking about re miracles. The loaves and fishes multiplied by Jesus? Is that 'explained'? Or would one take a stance that it isn't proven to have happened?

ithink you’re confusing issues here as i never mentioned “evolution” or questioned its credibility, so i’m not sure why you threw that red herring in there… as you know the question was about “the birth of life on this planet”
iasked you which “natural Law” this event complies to or which “proven scientific theory” it complies to… andi think you andi both know that the answer is none!
you listed potential reasons as to what may have caused it to happen… but your scientific training cant have given you better knowledge than all the great scientific minds that have been and currently, still are working on finding the answer to this problem.
so really, (and with all due respect) your reply, roughly says, “i’ll hazard a guess, rosie, but frankly your guess is as good as mine…”
because as we all know… no one actually knows how life happened, therefore it also does not comply with any natural "law", does it, which makes it a pretty miraculous event to me then! 😀
RE: inteligent design
Are we talking about life as 'life' in the physical sense or life as spirit or soul? If we believe we each are a spirit within a physical body, how would the spirit be explained? This cannot be explained by x+y=spirit, and therefore required some ID behind it ie. GOD and cannot be explained by natural law - can it?
Oh darn it this is the scientific thread isn't it 😀
RE: inteligent design
Rosie,
What you've got me thinking about is how consciousness appeared. Patsy's list could explain atoms forming into amino acids etc etc, but what has matter to do with consciousness?
In "Creative Evolution" by Henri Bergsson, a philosophical book published over 100 years ago, he IMO demonstrates for example that the whole purpose of evolution is to give a living form in matter through which consciousness can work. That has little to do with natural selection. Consciousness can make you stop hunting and 'waste' your time painting on a cave wall!
In the human body, Bergsson shows how everything exists just to allow our consciousness (the self) to be in matter. We work through the brain, but that needs oxygen and blood - so heart and lungs. We need nourishment and survival, so w can move, hence spine, legs, arms, senses, etc. But it's all meaningless if it isn't a means for Consciousness to INTRUDE into matter, through the brain. That IMO is what it's all about, in man anyway.
That 's why I see it as a Divine impetus, not a natural law. Evolution as a natural law would be nothing to do with God. In reality, IMHO, there's a Will directing everything to go either one way or the other, not just any way.
God IMO is way above any such "Laws". I don't believe in such Laws as I think God can do anything. They are IMO the hypothesis of man, unproven. But held onto since there's some parallel between the hypothesis and what has actually happened. The parallels are then touted as "proof for evolution".
