RE: inteligent design

Hi shaunm

Thanks for clarifying. Hopefully those of scientific mind and knowledge will be able to answer your questions here and give you the hard facts you're seeking. 🙂

Way over my head, I'm afraid, though I do have a good memory for old thread topics, hence my earlier replies to you. 😉

Best wishes,

Holistic

RE: inteligent design

Hi shaun,

I wrote that ages ago. I really don't know how this 'intelligent design' idea came about; I can only guess that it arose due to irrefutable proof of evolution, and this tries to explain it in terms of god.

Whilst I believe that god does have a hand in evolution, I am afraid that I cannot condone 'immediacy' of any species. I am a trained scientist, and any notion of 'intelligent design' in religious terms does not interest me.

Patsy.

RE: inteligent design

It does interest me! 😀

The past thread(s) are a while back and I forget the detail. It seems to be mainly an American notion and it occurs to me that in an age when Christian fundamentalism is, amazingly, on the rise (!), yet science seems to prove at least portions of evolution (I'd deny that it can prove all as we weren't around to watch things happen), ID may be a way for American Christians to somehow incorporate some science into their fundamentalist (supersitious) beliefs, to appear more rational?

Well David, you've hit the nail on the head:

'ID may be a way for American Christians to somehow incorporate some science into their fundamentalist (supersitious) beliefs, to appear more rational?'

I am afraid that I do not take this notion of intelligent design seriously. I studied earth sciences for years, and I have studied the way evolution works. It's an ongoing process. I fail to understand, having studied and seen it for myself, how anyone could think that man, for example, simply appeared out of nowhere when the evidence of our ancient ancestors can be found in the geological record. This applies to other animals, too.

The trouble with these 'intelligent design' arguments, is that they quickly run out of steam when empirical facts are presented. This is why I cannot find interest in such notions. I base my conclusions on my training and research.

I think we will have to disagree on this one.

Love,
Patsy.

RE: inteligent design

Sorry David, I forgot to add that I do indeed, believe that god/higher intelligence did have a hand in making the earth and its creatures, but slowly and over time, not immediately.

I think that God must be a scientist, for if we consider that God is real (which I do, no question about that) then he/she/it would have to work within scientific parameters. Evidence for the scientific nature of god is all around us. Why would anyone need to invent way-out-there stories to explain it? Most miracles for example, come about by purely natural means. Other evidence of god's scientific hand is all around us, in nature.

Love,
Patsy.
