RE: Gravity "Only a Theory"

ORIGINAL: songstress

This centrifugal force is called 'inertia' and if it wasn't there, we would indeed fly off into space.

Centripetal force actually prevents that, right? Centrifugal does cause things to 'fly off' from centre.

On anti-gravity, I've read lots of things but then forgotten them over time. Complex arrays of gyroscopes as I recall seem to do wierd things with their weight.

And in a book I always recommend, "A Dweller on Two Planets" by Phylos the Thibetan, it's pretty accurately recalled (if one accepts the book of course) how the technology of anti-gravity has already been known and forgotten again. The book speaks of a whole flip-side to science and Nature which they called millennia ago'The Night Side of Nature'. A whole side of science we've yet to discover.

Yep, it's centripetal, just that most people refer to it as centrifugal because that's what everybody understands.

Patsy gave the long answer to your original question. I would have very scientifically summed it up as "sloshing water". 😀

Ooo now anti-gravity. There's a topic I'd like to learn more about.
I've contemplated anti-matter before by myself, trying to get my head around what, in my terms, the actual opposite of an object would look like. I was imagining it as something reflected around it's centre of gravity in all planes, but then it made my head hurt so I had to stop thinking about it.

RE: Gravity "Only a Theory"

Hi Giles,

Anti-gravity. A pity but I've forgotten what I once knew on this. There have been a number of books, claims, stories that it's temporarily been created.

Your head probably hurt because you were contacting and crossing with youranti-head?

Seriously now, so centrifugal is easy to understand - you get thrown off a roundabout by it. But centripetal: is that just another word for gravity? I've never really known and guessed it was?

Edit to add: looked up a dictionary online. "Centripetal" is more general than gravity. Quote:

  1. Moving or directed toward a center or axis.
  2. Operated by means of centripetal force.
  3. Physiology. Transmitting nerve impulses toward the central nervous system; afferent.
  4. Botany. Developing or progressing inward toward the center or axis, as in the head of a sunflower, in which the oldest flowers are near the edge and the youngest flowers are in the center.
  5. Tending or directed toward centralization: the centripetal effects of a homogeneous population.

So Love is centripetal too. But then I've always thought Love is the psychological side of Gravity.

Here's a link to one book on the "Night Side of Nature" including anti-gravity.

RE: Gravity "Only a Theory"

Indeed, in applied physics, centripetal force is the force in the direction towards the central axis which is pulling the object back in to keep it within the "boundaries" so to speak.

e.g. a kid holding onto a spinning roundabout in the playground. The centripetal force is the force applied between their hands and the roundabout which is pulling them back in towards the centre, otherwise they would fly off at a tangent to the edge of rotation.

Maybe I should knock up a diagram..... (when I've got some time) 😉
