Lovely subject thank you:).. Recieveing love is very hard for so many who are all very willing to give it. Our lack of love for self is to blame here I feel. If you love yourself enough you will know your worth at recieving this love & also believing that you are worth this love. If you can love yourself ,truely love yourself warts an all;)
Not an easy task I know, as its something I have been working on for many years, Mine is due to low self esteem brought on by childhood issues as are so many peoples. I have so much love to give to everyone and anyone. But i had to learn & it took a long time that recieving love is a as divine a right as giving love . Both Moonfeather & Magpie have both said what i'm saying here so I wont repeat to much only that I agree whole hartedly with both posts.
I would like to share this with you (all) when this subject was going through my mind I got this message, Its not really entirely from spirit but mostly from my higherself & it is about my observations of how being closed to recieving love affects us.. Tbut you may get something from them .. if not no harm done;).
Love in the Inner room
Do not fear being loved. It is a joyous existence, one from the highest source for you to share.
Do not fear letting love not only unto your heart, but also your very being. It is the essence of the divine. Love is energy of great strength. It holds miraculous possibilities and there is never an end to the love that can be given or received. You give so much love, yet you fear receiving love. This cannot go on.
Imagine a room as big or small as you like. Now fill this room with love from yourself. See what a beautiful room you have made. See how it sparkles & shines. See the vibrant colour within feel it. Feel the energy, the warmth, the kindness, the gentleness, The room is now full but you are empty.
As each moment, each day passes you give a little or a lot of the love to someone who needs it. They are sad, hurt lonely sick. You take a bit more from that beautiful room each day. Watch how it empties; in time see how the shine has become duller. The colour more subdued. Eventually the room is empty. It has become like all those you helped along the way used to be, dull & grey. It needs more love. You need to fill the room up, but how can you when you have no love left to give. You have not allowed others to give you love, love you need, to fill your soul with a light that shines with colour so bright & vibrant it oozes out of your very being. Each day you took a little more & gave it away. Now the room, like the room inside you is empty. My child, You have become dull & grey as well.
One so loving to others is close to the heart of the divine. His love is strong & abundant, but you have to learn how to accept and receive this love into your life while on the earth plane.
All love however mild or strong is sent from the divine, via whatever vehicle he chooses, be it man, woman, child animal or spirit. Accept his love whatever way it comes to you. You are worth the effort, if you were not, Why would he go to all the trouble of making sure that love was coming your way like a flowing river joining an ocean.
So my child, open up your heart to receive love as well as to give love out or soon you will end up like the room. For my child your very being is your own inner room & is just like that room in your imagination and for you to have enough loving energy to give out, you must keep your inner room, your heart and soul well stocked up.
And Remember ....No matter what!!... you *are* as the universal creator designed you... PERFECT

IN GENERAL (and it is a generalisation, but definitely one in the majority, in my experience) this desire, and choice of action, is a deflection from ones self due to fundamental and subconscious feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness.
Right on the button, Magpie. Getting past 'People pleasing' is difficult but very important if we are going to open to unconditional love of Self, and of others. When we invest too much self worth in being of value to others, we diminish our own needs and growth.
I'm reminded of a revelation some years back, when I realised that the reason I would not give myself healing was that I did not believe I deserved it. Learn to love your self first - the rest will follow.
I think it was Chogyam Trumpa who said 'The heart of the warrior is so open that even the fluttering of a butterfly hurts him, yet still he stands'

Your comment about - "To receive love, you have to be willing to be vulnerable and that's a tough one sometimes" made me go "Hmmm....interesting!!!"
I would have thought Open Minded rather than Vulnerable?
