RE: Needing out of the rat race
By choice I guess I've never been in that race, but I thought I'd share a true and recent tale.
I have a friend in a bank I'd better not name. Her job takes her to a number of branches. And she's a devout meditator from a certain school of meditation. She talked openly about her deep spiritual life and the result was that a large percentage of the people at her main branch asked her to give them a non-denominational mediation course, which she did. It's so successful that she's done it at other branches too. So look for the Midlands branches of a certain ... Building Society actually ... where everyone is at peace. 😀
RE: Needing out of the rat race
Venetian's story reminded me of an interview with Patch Adams - the laughter doctor - who was talking about a nurse who ran a hospital maternity clinic and was feeling weighed down by all the paperwork, stress, poor clinic care, etc and wanted to leave... He asked her about her unit and she said she tried to make the incoming mothers feel welcome and at home, with as little stress as possible, and so on... So Dr Adams pointed out that she was creating a little oasis of light and healing within the hospital so that there, at least, was peace. If she left, who would hold that oasis for those who needed it?
While an urge to leave the rat-race may be the best thing for a person's needs, sometimes there are other ways we can serve. Do as the Romans do, but don't BE a Roman!

RE: Needing out of the rat race
Oh so true,
even though the rat race eventually didn't feel comfortable to me any more, I like the person above did share a more spiritual approach to the work i did along with the people I worked with... I do feel we had a better experience of our time at work as a result, so it was worthwhile, not quite in the job description I was taken on for but hey! theres always a reason we find ourselves in different places/ jobs and groups of people!

RE: Needing out of the rat race
This is an interesting thread, I can relate to a lot of it. I am trying to escape the cuthroat world of sales - have just come back from another horrible appointment. For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a nurse, specifically, a Macmillan nurse. Family circumstances meant that I wound up in the ratrace but I'm dying to get off the treadmill now!
It's going to mean a massive pay cut, and a real struggle at times, but I have a loving and supportive partner and I'm determined to become a nurse. I'm doing some extra GCSEs and A Levels by distance learning and working to get myself into a healthy financial position. Until then, getting through each working day as best I can. It might be years before I can start training but I believe it's a calling and I'll get there in the end.
Love and support to you all
