RE: Foregiveness, enough in itself?
This is precisely why the act of forgiveness must be 'earned.' Forgiving is a sacred act, and mustn't be wasted on people who will not learn by their actions, and have no knowledge of what forgiveness really means. More importantly, if someone does not want to be forgiven, even when forgiveness takes place without the perpetrator's knowledge, that burden will never be laid down, because it just becomes forgetting (qv) and not absolution.
Patsy.
I still fail to see how forgiveness has to be 'earned', it matters not whether the other person doesn't wish to be forgiven or not, if someone has committed an act that was inhumane, very harmful, part of the healing journey is to look at forgiveness - forgiveness sets you free, and in forgiving you are saying "I no longer wish to carry around the pain that you caused me" - you can forgive without the person ever realising you've done so, it allows you to move forward and carry on, regardless of whether the perpetrator realises that or not.
Some people that have been harmed will never meet their perpetrators, yet find it in their hearts to forgive the action.

RE: Foregiveness, enough in itself?
How can one forgive another without that other ever knowing it? That only begets forgetting, not forgiveness. How will that person know that he or she has been forgiven, and what lessons would they learn from their actions? The burden then becomes one of not learning a lesson.
We are told to forgive every single slight, no matter what it is, as long as it is quietly forgotten, and as long as the other person doesn't bear any responsibility for his/her actions. Recognising responsibilty in an act of forgiveness marries the forgiving and the forgetting, and also needs a good dose of remorse, too.

RE: Foregiveness, enough in itself?
It is very possible to forgive without the other person knowing. It has nothing to do with forgetting, the person who committed the act can never forget. The burden is in the knowing of what you've done to harm another.
At some level, that person will know that they have been forgiven, but more importantly, you will have set yourself free, forgiveness is about you not the person who has wronged you.

Hi Rosi,
I do see your viewpoint, but I have to disagree with it.
I remember the other thread on 'forgiveness' became so heated that it ended up a 'no-go area.' People do have different view on things like this, usually based on their own experiences.
Love,
Patsy.
