RE: Empathy

Hi Shawn,

This happened to me at a show on holiday, when I began to feel so upset I was fighting back the tears! It was only later that I found out the lady sitting next to me had been feeling this way as the show had upset her. (I hadn't noticed this as she had been wearing dark glasses and I wasn't looking at her). I only realised that they weren't my feelings when I spoke to her later and I had spent the time during the show trying to puzzle out why I felt this way!

A couple of weeks ago I was feeling really fed up and down and wasn't sure why, so I decided that this wasn't my own feeling it was someone elses. As soon as I decided this the feeling lifted and I felt quite happy!

Yesterday I became aware of a slight feeling of nausea, and when I turned round a girl behind me was quietly crouched on the ground. A minute later she was sick.

Not pleasant I know but this set me wondering how do you know if what you are feeling is your own feelings?[sm=scratchchin.gif]

I don't pick up on others' emotions as much as I used to - think I'm too well protected at times! - but I found that if I paused and mentally asked if the emotion I was feeling was mine, then if it went away instantly, I knew it wasn't. Just as you did above, Floffle!

If it's clearly not mine, then I ask for it to drain away and be transformed into positive energy. If it hangs around, then I have to acknowledge it as mine... darn it...
