I have a friend who is vegan and her hubby eats their rescued hens eggs, he says because of that he is not vegan. But his wife, given the chance leaves them for the hens as they will break the eggs and eat them themselves.
Again strict vegans do not eat animal products with include eggs.
I am not vegan or vegetarian but just wanted to add regarding rescued hens..
I have four hens which we bought from a farm..raised to be used as battery hens possibly,,,
They have a huge coup and pen to keep them safe....they come out every day and peck around for grit, grubs and a scratch.
I feed them on layers pellets, mixed corn (which the pigeons sometimes get to first ;)) and I boil up the vegetable peelings for them.
They lay the most divine deep golden yolked eggs, and they are very happy contented girls. It is said they stop laying in the winter...but my girls havn't, probably too well care for.
I would never consider getting rid when they have stop laying ..... I think they have a very pampered life considering what they could have had....
If you want to rescue hens Amethyst fairy I say go for it.....it's up to your personal ethics if you want to eat the eggs or not
Vegans don't eat eggs, but don't let that stop you for your daughter from giving these hens a better life if they are rescue hens. If you are just buying them for eggs and they are not rescue hens, then this would go against the vegan ethics as you are using the hens to serve a purpose 'supplying eggs'.
Vegans don't want to 'use' animals which is why we exclude all animal products/produce.
There are compromises when the people you live with don't share the same views (I live with a meat eater)

If you eat eggs, you're not vegan, fullstop.

There is a battery farm closing in April and a fullscale rescue will go on to get out 33,000 hens out to safety. This is in sussex area.
I'm going to a fund raising vegan lunch tomorrow to raise frunds towards it.
I will get details of where and when ,if anyone wants to rescue hens . They need transport, crates, pet carriers and homes for these poor creatures.
It is very rewarding to rescue hens as they all have individual characters and live on for another few years . Many come out without much, if any, feathers which soon grow back.
If anyone wants to help or home some hens, pm me next week.
I have 2 hens, they lay an egg each every day. We let them free range around the garden for a couple of hours most days. They are far better than supermarket eggs (although I am veggie, not vegan).
They are great pets too - follow you around the garden and are quiet (most of the time...).
I really wouldn't recommend letting them eat their own eggs though as mentioned above - once they start they will not stop doing it.
I'd recommend looking at the Eglu if you are interested in getting chickens - - they have a great hen house for small gardens and a good chicken forum on their site.
