Hello Irishdreamer

And welcome to HP. There are loads of things you can do to deal with your PCOS-induced body hair problem.

Here is a link to a site that had done all the hard work for you: Mary's PCOS Treatment FAQs. She's given a 1-5 start rating to treatments which work/don't work for PCOS. If you lower insulin, you lower testosterone. Insulin resistance appears to be the most important feature in managing PCOS. The two main targets are androgens and insulin. Most treatments are targeted at blocking androgens and increasing insulin sensitivity.

PCOS responds very very well to a lower carb diet - this is because high insulin causes high testosterone, and the reverse is also true. I'd recommend that you see a qualified nutritionist to get a proper appraisal. Whilst you wait there are many things you can do to get started on a lower carb (not 'low carb' i.e. Atkins) diet, with an emphasis on lots of vegetables, lean protein and smaller amounts of complex carbohydrates.

1. The most important advice is to remove all sugar and sugar-containing foods from your diet. Read labels. Also avoid dried fruits for the first couple of months, because of their concentration of fructose.

2. Eat lean proteins at each meal - chicken, turkey, legumes (beans, peas, lentils), tofu, oily fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, herring, mackerel), eggs.

3. Have 3 main meals and 3 snacks - to keep your blood sugar stable. Breakfast, midmorning snack, lunch, midafternoon snack, dinner, small supper.

4. Include protein in all your snacks - piece of fruit with 3 or 4 raw nuts, a small handful (about an eggcupful) of pumpkin or sunflower seeds, a small soya yoghurt, a couple of oatcakes with a bit of humous, crudites with humous.

5. Eat lots of vegetables, they should be the majority of your plate. Especially green vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, spinach, lettuce etc.

6. Eat good quality complex carbohydrates in small portions: porridge oats, brown rice, wholemeal bread (the best you can afford), oatcakes, ricecakes, millet, buckwheat etc.

I'd also recommend taking the herbal supplement Agnus castus - which is very good for regulating and balancing hormones. Take 2 capsules in the morning, because that is when your liver is most active. Other supplements which are useful for regulating female hormones are magnesium citrate (400mg/day) and B Complex (specifically B6) 50mg/day.

Do have a look at Mary's FAQ list, and try to adopt as many of her suggestions as you can.

Ava x

Hi and welcome to HP

I endorse what Ava suggests - and another website to look at is Marilyn Glenville's - she specialises in women's health problems, and has helped so many get better.

She has many free downloads including a Foundation of Health ebook for general health. It's well worth reading.

Hi,
Waxing a waste of money. I was relatively hairy once - IPL laser. Marvellous and not painful - well only a little! Takes about one year in which you have to avoid the sun but worth it! Laser even removed the scars from ingrowing hairs that waxing had left me with.
I should have done it when I was very young.

Kind regards,
Christina

Hi irishdreamer,
Have you tried epilation? I find it a lot quicker to complete that waxing, and a darnsight less painful too. It won't solve the issue, but it may provide the change of scenery neccessary to keep you going that little bit longer - it's horrible being so helpless and frustrated, no matter what the cause.
I have only heard good things about laser hair removal (apart from the price, haha). If it's an option, then I wish you all the best in going ahead with it and finding the right place for you.

Arvigo Abdominal Therapy

Hi,
I have recently joined so only just seen your post. I have had PCOS and have been having Avrigo Abdominal Therapy,( a non invasvie massage of the abdomen which is used to reposition the pelvic organs so that any blockages and congeston are removed meaning the body can self-regulate heal and regenerate) using castor oil packs and taking herbal supplements prescribed by my therapist with fantastic results. I no longer have excess body hair and my hormones seemed to be balanced now after 6 months. It is a really good treatment and fantastic for loads of different gyneological problems as well as digestive problems and fertillity issues. If you can find a therapist near you I would give it a try.
