Hello everyone,
From the Daily Mail 28/4/04
The 8 minute therapy for hysterectomy
Thousands of women will be spared the trauma of a hysterectomy by a revolutionary therapy that can be carried out in minutes.
The treatment is being approved today (28/4) for use throughout the Health Service, with potential savings up to £29 million a year. The balloon therapy allows the lining of the womb to be safely removed using heat treatment that lasts only 8 minutes. It does not involve any surgical cuts and patients can go back to work or resume family life the next day.
A deflated thermal baloon is inserted through the neck of the womb, where it is inflated and filled with fluid. It is then heated to around 87°C. This destroys the lining, which is then removed.
The technique, called the Thermachoice Balloon Therapy System, is being approved by the Government's National Institute for Clinical Excellence.
It says less invasive treatment must be offered to all women suffering heavy menstrual bleeding - the reason for up to half the UK's 60,000 hysterectomies each year.
A nurse called Carole Senior was also interviewed. She received the treatment 5 years ago. She said:
"I'm glad more women are going to be encouraged to have this treatment - it is really an effective alternative."
May be of some help to someone...
Love and Light
