Hi all,
Can anyone suggest anything i can take to ease the cramps a little bit?
The first 2 or 3 days are always really painful and day one is often spent in bed with a hot water bottle!! I dont really want to take pain killers....
Anything that could help?
Thanks for any advice
Fiona
RE: Period Pain
Hi Fiona:D
I can sympathise with you as I suffered just the same from the age of 14 through till I was in my mid thirties when the pains got less. The only thing that helped was the Pill which I was on for quite a number of years. After I had children the condition got better - but I think you are quite young from another post you made - so you probably want a solution with slightly less commitment for now!;)
I was never 'checked out' for fibroids of anything because at 16 my doctor told me to take Aspirin and I never went back for help. I suggest you make sure that there isn't an underlying problem such as this to put your mind at rest.
My daughter who is 14 now suffers just as badly as I did and it upsets me to watch her writhe in agony. I have been taking her for osteopathic treatments, she had three and the pains went, but then came back again. We now have noticed that she is bad every other month - something which is common. She is going for treatment again this week as I will do anything to help her avoid suffering for years. Hopefully it will help or at least reduce the pains. If you want to know more about how osteopathy can help your condition click on my profile and go to our website for more information.
Failing that, I am afraid that the only thing that helped me was ibuprofen - but I hate to tell people to take that too much as it is so bad for you. But if that's your only option, I found that take a couple of tablets as soon as I felt the pain started tended to nip it in the bud. Stretching exercises can also help - Yoga type stretches.
Best of luck.

RE: Period Pain
i am sorry to hear you are in a little bit of pain. the following may help:
Start to take Magnesium and Manganese these two help to balance out hormones and help with headaches, migraines, tension, energy levels
Clary sage is excellent for the stomach with a little grapeseed oil or almond oil, a base oil! add 2 - 4 drops and rub into the abdomen, it really helps with spasms.
If the pain gets worse you may want to see your GP so to rule out any underlying problem such as Fibroids, cysts, endometriosis.
I hope this helps, oh drinking plenty of fresh filtered water helps to.
with love

RE: Period Pain
Candie,
Your story sounds familiar, except im onoly hitting 19 in dec so may have years more of this pain lol - My periods were 'late' in starting, apparently 14 is late (?!) and after 6 months of the most he**ish pain every month which would last anywhere between 7 and 17 days i was put on the pill like you. I dont now but i used to be so sick i would pass out and end up in hospital every month without fail....yet i was still told take take 2 painkillers and see how it goes!! [:@]
I had a post about this on the old HP, but not sure how to link back as i remember there was some really useful advice...
I use a lavender rub which seems to ease it, or maybe just makes me feel calmer...its strange though cos any other time of the month i cannot stand the smell of lavender, reminds me of old ladies lol Thanks for the info on the Stretching exercises i will give it a try 😀
RE: Period Pain
As Tammy says, clary sage is brilliant, but should be used with caution and you should definitely not drink any alcohol on the same day as using it. What is really effective is to mix it with chamomile (1 drop of each per 5ml of grapeseed or plain lotion) and massage the abdomen, hips and lower back.
Hope this helps.

Ahhh great advice lesley,
Thanks for very!:D
RE: Period Pain
Hi everyone,
I too suffered terrible pain when I started at age 10 yrs. I just wanted to lie down and school was horrendous. My pereoid used to be very heavy and I used to get my friends to stand behind me when I stood up in case I had stained my uniform.
My Nan used to advise sipping hot water with peppermint oil in it to ease the pain which seemed to help.
Unfortunately both my daughters suffer too. On the first day they both end up in sick room at school being sick and I get call from school to come and collect. They would miss so much schooling if I kept them off all the time. Hot water bottles seem to work the best and a long sleep!! Is this a trend for women today to suffer so much?

RE: Period Pain
I remember reading that this problem is often particularly bad in women who haven't had children and that after pregnancy, the problem improves. Was this the case for you Reikiangel?
Probably a bit of a drastic solution, but thought I would pass it on.

RE: Period Pain
Reikiangel,
sorry to hear that you had/have problems too and esp for your daughters, its so awful esp at school. I remember my form teacher obviously never had any probs with hers when she was younger and always inisited i was fine and there was nothing wrong with me, The fact that i was being so sick and could hardly stand because of the in pain didnt seem to matter. In the end the doctor would give me morphine injections just so i could go to school!! - Ended up missing loads though because of periods [:@]
they really are a curse! [:'(]
RE: Period Pain
I know where your coming from with the pain. I rarely have a period ... as I have problems with my insides .. maybe 3 or 4 a year. But when I do, OUCH the pain is unbearable at times. Solution, curl up on the sofa, with a cut of hot orange, a box of chocs and a silly film .. won't cure the pain but will take your mind of it for a couple of hours!!!

RE: Period Pain
I would like to offfer this technique which I learned from a tai chi teacher ....you need someone to do it with/for you.
Lie on the floor with knees raised/feet on floor
Your friend/mum/sister sits on your right, facing you.
She places her right palm gently over the womb area which will warm it.
She holds your right hand in her left hand.
She places her left thumb in the vee between your thumb and index finger.
On her slow out breath to the count of 4 she presses onto the point of the vee, then releases for 4 while breathing in....repeats for as long as you like
hope this helps.
