Hello everyone
I'm new to this Forum, but would appreciate your thoughts on this one please.

I've just turned 55 and hadn't had a period for 2 years. Suddenly last week out of the blue, one started. It was a proper bleed, not just spotting. I did a bit of research & the general opinion was that it would be worth getting this checked out with my gp. I have an appointment next week, but was wondering if anyone has had an experiance like this or any advice please?

Best wishes
Magenta

Hello Magenta ,

I think it's important the you seek advice from your GP because it would be wrong to make a diagnosis in a public forum.

Please read this article on the patient website:

Namaste,
Myarka.

Hi

Hi

I am 57 and my periods had stopped since one year and all of a sudden I had my periods and that too very heavy bleeding. I have got fibroids and it was really very painful. I was absolutely shocked and today is my fourth day.

I will definitely have to consult my GP. But I think this is normal.

Hi Magenta and Astha

Bleeding 2 years after menopause is NOT normal. Please, both of you go and see your doctor. It may not be anything serious but on the other hand some form of treatment may be necessary, and sometimes sooner than later.

Don't hesitate - go and get it sorted!

Thank you all for your replies to this - I've just come back from seeing my GP and she has fast tracked me for an appointment with the Gynae dept at the hospital. I will have an appointment within 2 weeks and will have lots of tests done.
She said a period after 1 year was abnormal and 2 years is cause for concern. I know she is painting the worse case scenario and many women who this has happened to do not have cancer. She said that by coming to see her so quickly was the best thing I could have done.
So Astha, please go and see your GP - I'm glad I did. Hopefully it is nothing too serious, but you just don't know. Unfortunately cancer in all it's shapes and forms is very prevailant in my family so the quicker this is seen to the better I think.
Thank you all for your support - I will keep you posted as to my progress!

I was told that after no periods for a year, I wouldn't have any more so if I did have one now, I definitely would get it checked out. Hope everything goes well.

I would think about using birth control, just in case! I knew a 65 year old woman who had been post menopausal for ten years. She fell off a ladder one day whilst cleaning a window. That night she began to bleed as though having her monthly. She went to her doctor the following day. Her doctor said the trauma of a hard fall could cause such an effect. He told her to use birth control in case the bleeding signified a return to fertility. The elderly woman had a monthly for several months thereafter, then it ceased.

upadate on situ!
well so far i've had various tests & scans & i have a small fibroid and small cyst on my right ovary, neither of which are cause for concern at the moment. i've had a blood test to check for other things, but am still waiting for results.
so far so good!

Strange how different doctors give different advice. I was told two years without a period before I could say I was through the menopause. When mine started again after 18mths I didn't go back to my doctors. I had two in a row. Then finally I went two years clear. Hmmm....be nice if they all gave the same advice. I probably would have panicked if I'd read this at the time.

Two years? Eek! I asked if I could wait for a year and a half before having my coil removed just to make sure. Maybe I should have left it longer.

I think, like most things, we are all different and will all have totally different menopause symptoms. We will all take our own time in getting through it. Some will breeze through it and others will have the full on night sweats and all the other awful symptoms. Maybe the reason I almost made the two years, then had to start counting again, was due to the fact that I always suffered with extremely heavy periods? Don't know and now it doesn't matter!

Hi all
Well I've finally got the all clear after more blood tests! Doc really not sure why I had a period again so we've put it down to just 'one of those things!'.
I'm glad I did go and get it checked though; if I have any more problems, I'm in the system already and like most things, if caught early enough can be treated.
Thanks for all your replies & advice!
Blessings
