ive just been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and have not learned much from the specialist!. does anyone else have this condition? if so what treatment do you recieve?, Im also worried i wont be able to have children, the doctor said they cant tell me until i start trying for a child, but i could do with some reassurance if anyone has got kids who has had this i would be really grateful, or any practical tips??

Sorry to hear your news but is does not necessarily mean that you cannot have children - look at Posh spice she has gone on to have 3!! Also a friend of mine had just had her first. I am sure that someone on HP will be able to reassure you a little bit, also check out the web - its full of indepth factual information and now you know what is wrong you can set about informing yourself.

Sending you lots of love

Hi Wroufy...

I guess you have the polycystic ovaries syndrome and not just a cyst or two....

I have pcos...the first most important thing that helps is weight control. Also and I dont wish to sound dramatic here there is a tendancy for people with PCOS to be prone to type two diabetes in later life so the more you check your diet etc now the better....now the children thing....I wasnt getting any periods at all (didnt have for about 5 years or so) and therefore I needed drugs to help me ovulate...the result will be my wonderful eldest who will be four in July....my body sorted it self out afterwards (as can often happen) and just under a year later I got caught with my second son all by ourselves which was a huge shock and he has just turned two....I know quite a few people with PCOS and some have conceived naturally although it may have taken a little longer and some have needed some assistance. The thing I would say is dont worry about not being able conceive before you are ready to start trying...the more we worry about these things the harder it seems to be.....the good news is that you have already been diagnosed and will not have to go through that awful waiting stage of trying to find out why in the case that you may find it difficult to conceive and you may not of course....

also should mention i did have the ovarian diathermy on both ovaries which worked for about 15months but didnt fall with that.

I have been diagnosed since 1991 with pcos, and i have 4 children! It wasnt easy as I had to have fertility treatment with 3 of them and no. 4 was a pleasant surprise, but it was all worth it. If you want to read up on it there is a really good book by colette harris called pcos a womans guide to polycystic ovary syndrome, she has also written a diet book for pcos. they are both really informative and i use mine like a bible. there is also a really good self support web site which is fantastic. i hope all this helps and i wish you all the best for the future.

Hi

I dont know much about pcos - my mother had it and my two sisters have it. I dont think it means you def cant have children as my mother has had the 3 of us and my twin sister has had a baby who is now 18 months old and she is pregnant with her second child - she is just over 3 months. It did take a while for both my mother and sister to get pregnant but it did happen.

The doctors in this country dont seem to check unless you have been trying for a baby for at least a year - thats what my doc said anyway!
