I'm having the mirena coil fitted in a few weeks, I'm 19 but have had to come off the combined pill due to high blood pressure and the coil is really the only option left for me as I've tried the mini pill and the injection and haven't got on with either. I'm just a bit worried about having it fitted and also about the side effects it can cause because the only reviews I have read online have all been negative or 'horror' stories.
I'm just looking for some reassurance or some positive reviews of the mirena coil 🙂
Thanks.

Hi there,
I have this and find it brilliant. The fitting is a little uncomfortable but make sure you take some pain killers beforehand. I am sure your doctor will advise you on this.
I have no side effects and I have found it brilliant for me. No periods at all either which suits me fine!
Good luck.

Booked in for mirena next week!
Hi, have read you comment. I am booked in next week for a mirena to be fitted. I have been reading theese posts and feel bit concened to say the least from some of the horror stories on here! I have been given the option of the Mirena or ablation of my cervix only as been on Progesterone HRT for 16 years with no periods or problems until last couple of years, my symptoms will become worse without one or the other. decided on the Mirena as an easy option to try first but now after reading on here, am not so sure. Like you i would like to hear from anyone who has got a postive view of it.

I can honestly say it is the best contraception I have ever had - I am on my second one. The fitting of the first one was uncomfortable - apparently heightened because I have not had children and I also did not take any pain relief beforehand. However the second time round, my doctor gave me some painkillers to take an hour before I went in, and I didn't even know it had been fitted. Good luck with it xx
I had the mirena coil fitted a few years ago mainly for very heavy periods, as well as contraception. Yes, it's uncomfortable when it's fitted, but it only lasts 20 minutes or so - no biggie. After going through labour twice, a walk in the park!
It has been very good. I have a light period every month, which is a real blessing after suffering from heavy bleeding and subsequent anaemia. I don't even think about it now, I don't think I have any side effects, a really good decision on the whole.
The tinter is full of horror stories... don't google symptoms as you quite often imagine the worse case scenario! xx
I have never had the Mirena coil fitted, but I have had others fitted and apart from the uncomfortable-ness whilst fitting, I can highly recommend coils. No worry about falling pregnant. If you want a baby, just go and have the thing removed.
Fitting only takes about 15 minutes.
Good luck!

Mirena coil....
Hi
I am new to the forum and new to having the mirena coil. I had implanon for 6 years and on my 7th year it was changed to nexplanon. I found that I gained nearly 2 stone, my moods where erratic and sex drive reduced. I was unsure what my options where and after dealing with a reluctant nurse to have my implant removed she put forward the idea of the coil as it would be the only way I wouldn't put on weight. I was then taken to see the nurse who would fit the coil and whom asked how my periods where prior to any contraception, which I struggled to remember as it was a long time ago.
Anyway, the mirena coil was the final decision. Yes there was discomfort and a lot of pain afterwards but the reason I'm writing here is that I'm finding that everyone is so negative about it and my biggest fear being THE WEIGHT GAIN! I am now stressing about it and wondering if this is a minority or if I'm likely to gain weight with it despite the nurse advising I wouldn't.
I have also been told it is horrendous to remove. So with 5 years to go I am panicking now!
I have had a coil fitted many MANY years ago and while the insertion was uncomfortable once in it was fine.
I know from my experience as a pharmacist in a women's hospital that many thousands of women have used Mirena without problems. I am sure you will be fine
