RE: Menopause
I would be interested in any advice on this thread. I went crashing into menopause when my periods stopped in May 2000 - up until then (I was nearly 45) my cycle was set to the atomic clock! 28 days, no misses (other than 2 pregnancies and a miss-carriage) from the age of 15.
The menopause is not that much of a problem other than the ability to spontaneously combust every two hours. I rarely need to wear a coat, and can only sleep with a sheet - and end up having to change my nightie at least once during the night. If I could get rid of the hot flushes I would be extremely pleased. Tried black cohosh, red clover and homeopathic remedies to no avail - and before anyone groans, I gave each item a run of 5 months. Luckily I don't seem to have been landed with the mood swings that others describe.
Come on HP Peeps - get your thinking caps on!
RE: Menopause
Oh Jabba, I can relate 100% to what you've said. especially the spontaneous combustion - only it my case it was on the hour every hour. I have been into menopause for about 4 years now and late last year I was given some oestrogen to take for a couple of week as I was in the process of having tests at the hospital at the time. I actually felt good after taking the oestrogen and - touch wood - things have calmed down a bit. This was prescribed by the gyneacologist though - not over the counter.
Like you, I tried black cohosh, sage, wild yam and anything else I could lay my hands on but nothing seemed to work. I didn't fancy HRT either and I have just been trying to soldier on and hope that things eventually die down.
RE: Menopause
I have just started getting menopausal symptoms, mainly irregular periods and incredible mood swings, but not had any hot flushes yet.
My sisterhas been having hot flushes for a couple of years now andtried the menopause cake which really helps. She brought some with her when she visited last and it is delicious! When she makes up the cake shecuts it into small pieces, puts each piece into a small bag in the freezerthen takes one outevery day to take to work.
She can't remember where she got her recipe from but the one onthe page below is the same as hers except that she adds chopped dried apricots.

Hiya
Marilyn Glenville's book "Natural Alternatives to HRT" is really good - gives lots of advice on diet, etc, relating to all the different problems of the menopause, including osteoporosis. I've found it really useful and have also recommended lots of her tips to my reflexology clients.
Also, I have recently recommended the suppplement Maca (from a Peruvian root plant)after reading an article about it(you can find it on the internet) to a client suffering badly from hot flushes etc and she has found it really helpful.
Hope this helps.

RE: Menopause
my friend swears by Don Quai, 2 tabs twice a day. i have recently been getting hot flushes, tho not very badly. taking don quai has got rid of the daytime ones completely, i just get 2 during the night (that i know of) and i seem to wake up just before and go back off to sleep (usually) straight after.
RE: Menopause
I sent for this book a while ago and have just got it out toagain as I was feelingyukki.
It is called 'Treating Meonpause Naturally' byMaryon Stewart. I got it from the womens nutritional advisoryservice.
Black Coash is supposed to be good for night sweats and plenty of soya in the diet helps.
I am going to try a supplement that is suggested in the book that contains soya.
good luck
PSjust found the web address dont know if you can still get a free booklet

RE: Menopause
Hi Flower 😀
Ican recommend reading Leslie Kentons book "Passage to Power". She writes about HRT, the hormonal cycle, osteoporosis and everything else to do with the menopause. It is laced with dietry advice as well - very briefly she says eat loads of fresh fruit& veg, seaweeds, grains, sprouted seeds, brown rice, nuts, legumes and if you need oil use extra virgin olive oil (something to do with it being easier to break down)- avoid coffee (sorry even de-caff - it's the actual coffee and not caffinethat can bring on hot flushes), tea, alcohol, sugar and anything highly processed. I'm only half way through reading it, but think its fab. She explains all the scientfic stuff and how the menopause is not a "oestrogen deficient disease" - but a natural process. What I also like about this book is the wayshe brings in a spiritual aspect of the menopausesuch ascelebrating your time to be creative and following what's in your soul. The whole feeling from it is very inspiring and powerful. I'm only in my thirties so don't need the advice quite yet, but I already feel far less apprehensive about the menopause (easy to say I know!!).
She lists some plant remedies - black cohosh, sage, motherwort, chasetree, dong quai and wild yam which all have their own individual uses. She also talks about progesterone cream (this is natural progesterone that has been extracted from wild yam). People often don't get on with the progesterone in HRT, but the wild yam stuff is very different to the synthetic progesterone.
Anyway, good luck I'm sure you'll be fine - focus on the positive aspects.
RE: Menopause
I believe soya and soya-based foods are supposed to be helpful, too....
RE: Menopause
Help - how do you know whether you are in menopause, i have my normal period (lasting 4 days, normal) and then 12 days later (from day 1) i have had another, has anyone else experienced this, i don't really want to go to the doctor and feel embarrassed if he says that this is normal
