Hya Everyone

I have Endometriosis and a two inch Ovarian cyst. Been on medication but my Gynaecologist really wants me to have a Hysterectomy. Yesterday I agreed to it. I am a little scared of what to expect, he gave me an infomation leaflet, but it's 6 years out of date. He's told me the insision will be through the bikini line so minimum scaring (that doesn't bother me, at 38 years old I won't be in a bikini anymore. lol)

So has anyone had a Hysterectomy? Would you mind sharing what it was like before and after, what the scaring is like, is it painful, will I feel like a zombie afterwards? I would like to know EVERYTHING! I don't mind if you would prefer to PM but I would like to hear what I am letting myself in for.

HI Angel
I had a Hysterectomy because Endometriosis plus cyst and other things but I was lucky I had the suction but I had a caesarian section that is the same cut it does shrink back and these days I believe the cut has got smaller,
Why dont you ask your Doctor about the suction method,I had mine done on Friday was walking the next day, i will say if you have the incision it will be painful for a while at the end of the day it is a major operation but with having what you have got please do not hesitate to have the Hysterectomy done I have never looked back since best thing that could of happened to me.
You will be afraid of course you will but just think your not the only one, easy for me to say I was absolutely terrified and I was on my own coping with it all but as I said it was the best thing to have happened to

Good luck and I wish you all the best

By the way do what I did take Bach Flower remedies called Rescue Remedy I just shoved it down my neck it is for fear

Hi Angel,

I had a hysterectomy via abdominal incision at 37 for endemetriosis, and I have to say that it was the best thing I could have done, it gave me my life back.

My incision was through the bikini line even though it's been decades since I wore a bikini! The scar is all but invisible, if you didn't know it was there and look very closely, you'd be none the wiser.

Ask your consultant if there's any chance you can keep your ovary that doesn't have a cyst. My consultant was keen to keep mine if there was no endo on them, as once you go into the menopause your natural protection to heart disease and osteoporosis reduces. It might not be possible, but if it is then you'll avoid going into a sudden menopause. Nature lets us into it gradually, but removal of the ovaries throws you straight in the deep end.

If you can't keep an ovary, look for a homepath or herbalist who can help you with that sudden plunge into the menopause.

The hysterectomy itself: you will probably wake up feeling like you've been kicked in the stomach by a horse! Don't try to be brave, take the pain relief that's offered, and if it isn't enough, say so. You will be recovering from major surgery and you'll need all the help you can get.

You will probably be quite tearful for a while - my gynaecologist, a man, was quite open about that and freely said that he doesn't believe that we fully understand the role of the womb and that the after-effects couldn't be explained within our current framework of understanding, but that no-one could deny them as they were seen time after time.

You will probably have a physiotherapist come see you with some exercises to do to help your recovery. They are a bit tough at first but persevere, it's worth it. The exercises will help with circulation, pelvic floor strengthening, preventing that pouchy stomach that you can get after major abdominal surgery, and some other things that I won't go into here!

Make sure you have a support network in place, people to do your shopping, look after the kids, don't try to be superwoman, and for once put yourself first. You are not being selfish - the more your look after yourself in the next couple of months, the quicker you'll be able to recover from the surgery.

I'm sure there's lots more I could say, and others will no doubt be along to add their advice soon. If I can be of any help, or just someone who's had the op who can provide a listening ear, do pm me and let me know.

Hope that helps,
Amber

Hi Angel , just to follow on from the other replies - I had my hysterectomy at 34 after suffering with endometriosis for 5 years , not fun with 2 young children ! I underwent total abdominal with removal of both ovaries due to cysts and severe scarring. . I'd been almost begging to undergo surgery for the last 2 years of it. I didn't worry about anything as I'd decided it was a means to an end - eg - getting my life back.. the worst bit for me was waking up the first morning after in the menopause ! hot flushes you name it I had them - but at least I knew what was going to happen due to meds I'd been on before surgery, and not forgetting to be told to stand up straight with a line of staples across my bikini line - ouch ~ thank god for the drugs they give you..:) Liz x x

Well I have been out today and brought "Big Bridget Jones" style knickers. They are quite lacy and look feminine so I won't feel like granny just yet. lol Also got a couple of pair of trackie bottoms.....so going for the granny and chavy look...hmmm, wonder if it will catch on. 🙂 Got one of those over the bed table due also, feel that might be benifical and a V shaped pillow.

I am terrified, hoping the retail therapy at this time will help calm the nerves.

Hey everyone

Just an update, tomorrow I go into Hospital (that's if they don't cancel on me in the meantime) for the Hysterectomy. A little nervous now, seems like I've waited forever for it, but now there doesn't seeem to be enough time to do everything. lol

Wish me luck!

Hiya Angel
Just wanted to send my very best wishes to you for tomorrow. I had a total hysterectomy two days after my 40th birthday (two years ago). For me it was the best thing I ever did though i'd ummed and arhed for 5 years about having it done.

My scar was longer than I expected because when they operated they found a big fibroid that hadn't been there six weeks earlier at my last scan. Yes, it was sore but the pain wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. I was having a shower the next day!

Best bit of advice I was given - once you're home again sleep with a pillow between your knees as this takes the pressure off your scar. It really worked for me and made me a lot less uncomfortable. Also, sleep, sleep and sleep some more!

Good luck and speedy healing vibes for you xx

Thanks ladies

Got jobs all done and out the way with, just need to put a few more bits in the suitcase, but I don't want to do that till I know the op is definatley going ahead. My son is putting all my Reiki music on his old Ipod tonight, he's already filled it with my Bon Jovi music at least if I get too scared I have Jon to calm me down. lol

I haven't done Reiki for years now Jenny, but I was thinking about it last week and thought I'll restart once I'm out of theatre...hence why I'm getting my favourite Reiki music uploaded tonight.

Hi Angel

Ive just been reading your thread and wondered how you have been doing since your hysterectomy.

Im am due to have a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy next Friday 26th August 2011. I am keeping one ovary and having it drilled to remove pcos cysts. I am 36 with 3 children, to cut a long story short I had traumatic births resulting in C sections one of which was because of a ruptured uterus. This lead to a lot of gyni problems since, 5 lap surgeries trying to deal with severe scar tissue. My uterus has joined to my bladder again and I get constant pelvic pain and heavy prolonged bleeding.

I did go to see a Gyni in the US (where I now live) a few weeks ago to see if I could have another baby via IVF but she said no way as my uterus would rupture again and there was a high chance I would not survive. A hysterectomy was recommended. Im also having my appendix out. My old c sections scar area is being re-opened and it will be a 6-8inch incision.

Even though Ive had a lot of surgery Im starting to get really scared for next week. My Gyni has an Oncologist assisting her just in case there are complications.

Others peoples experiences are welcomed
