hi,
i was diagnosed with an early menopause 7 years ago, and have not had a period for well over 2 years now, have been on hrt but came off that 2 years ago as i didnt think i needed it anymore.
everything has been fine up until the easter weekend when i had a few smears of blood stains (sorry if this sounds gross) but nothing since,i have seen my doctor and now have to see a gynacologist for some test to take cells from the womb to check its not cancer.
has anyone else had this test and do they know what its called? and is it painfull?
i would be very gratefull for any feedback
thankyou

RE: bleeding after menopause

Hiya and welcome to HP.

You may be referring to a hysteroscopy. This is a relatively simple proceedure and takes only a little while (upto around 20 mins or so) as with all gynae stuff its important to try and relax and you may have your feet up so you may get some strain on the thighs. the will give a local to the cervix but its really upto your own sensitivity and i believe if you have had children this proceedure is slightly easier.

Hope that helps and try not too worry, there can be all sorts of reasons for an irregular show and not necessarily cancer...

let us know how you get on..

RE: bleeding after menopause

I to have a similar question. I am 57 and had my last period 3 years ago. To my horror I have had had a show, this was preceeded last week with tenderness in my breast just like I used to get before my period. I will of course get this checked out but it appears that I have the symptoms of a period at my age and three years after I stopped. Does anyone know of this happening to other women.

RE: bleeding after menopause

Orangeblossom, I have just been through a similar scenario. I had no bleeding for nearly two years when I suddenly had a show - and when I had my smear test recently, I mentioned this to the nurse who suggested I saw my GP. He referred me for a hysteroscopy as he wanted to make sure the lining of the womb hadn't thickened. Anyway I went to see the consultant who in actual fact didn't give me a hysteroscopy as the gynae scan I had previous to the consultation didn't show up any thickening or any other abnormalities in the endometrium. By coincidence though my smear test came back with a minor abnormality so the consultant called me back in for a colposcopy (a camera in the cervix). I have just had the letter today to say that there isn't anything suspicious going on but that the tissue in the cervix is thinning a bit and has caused a slight inflammation. (Apparently this common in ladies of our tender years!) He will prescribe me some eostrogen (sp) to rectify this. Do please check out with your GP though if only to put your mind at rest. One thing I will say is that when I had the abnormal "show" it was like the onset of period cramps rather than just some bleeding and that gave the doctor a feeling that it could be hormonal rather than anything suspicious.

Hope this all helps. Please PM me if you want any further info as I have literally just been through this in the last few months.

RE: bleeding after menopause

Thank you for that Sue.

I am glad that everything has worked out OK for you.

From what you describe and what I was actually feeling myself it is a hormonal issue, as my body is acting in the way it did when I had my periods.

Did this happen just the once or did it happen again the next month?

RE: bleeding after menopause

Hi Orangeblossom

As I recall this wasn't happening just once a month, I was feeling like this on and off for quite while, can't be more specific on timings but I would check it out with your GP though - he will probably be able to do an internal there and then to see if you need to have a further examination. At the moment everything feels fine but now and again I just get an odd cramp-like feeling - consultant said that sometimes some menopausal women take longer to settle down than others.

Let's know how you get on though!

RE: bleeding after menopause

Little update on my problem.

You don't get many perks working for the NHS but this was one. I personally know the nurse specialist who deals with gynae problems such as this.

I spoke to her and she said, what I expected her to say, 'I must have it checked out'. She arranged a scan pronto and I had it today. She came and saw me this afternoon and looked at the results.

The good news is there is nothing cancerous. They can tell by the thickness of something in the womb. Mine was 3.8 and concern kicks in when it is over 5.0. The not so good news, but she assures me it is nothing to concern myself about, although I will have to have treatment is, they think they can see a fibroid or maybe a polp which could have caused the bleeding.

The Consultant will see me to discuss the next procedure.

RE: bleeding after menopause

dont know too much about polyps but have a fibroid as do a couple of friends of mine...not sure i can tell you much about it though except everytime you hear fibroid the words hysterectomy are generally presented as well, but lets hope you have some options you are comfortable with....

good luck with your appointment and keep us updated in the meantime, hope its not painful...

RE: bleeding after menopause

Hi Orangeblossom

I'm pleased to know that your scan showed nothing suspicious. My lining was a similar thickness to yours so we both have healthy endometriuseseses:D

Don't worry too much about the polyps, my gynae found one when he was giving my a colposcopy and he took it out there and then[&:]. If he has to go a bit deeper, it shouldn't be more than a bit of discomfort. He also discovered a couple of small fibroids in the womb but they shrink as we get older and become "wombstones" so they have been left alone.

Hope your next appointment goes well though

RE: bleeding after menopause

Thank you Sue

You've been most helpful.

I am glad the results are quite positive. My nurse friend assured me that her main concern was the lining thickness and the other, although needing attention wasn't a priority.

I am glad this post highlighted the problem, as when it happens to you think you are the only person it's happening to. I am told, as you are aware, it is quite a common problem.

RE: bleeding after menopause

Firstly I want to apologise to Misscaz for practically highjacking her post with my problem, however I do hope she takes comfort from the fact she is not alone.

As I said earlier I was extremely fortunate to be able to fast track thru the system as I work in a hospital and know the gynae people there.

Tonight I have been rung by the specialist nurse who has spoken to the Consultant I would have been seeing, to discuss my scan results. I am very lucky to be given the news that no further treatment is deemed necessary.
