Since having my 3 1/2 year old daughter I have constantly suffered from vaginal dryness. Been advised by Family Planning Clinic only solution is to use lubricant - but I'm fed up using this every time as the longer it goes on the more 'clinical' it feels. Any suggestions to promote natural lubrication will be very welcome.
Thanks, Yvonne x
Hi Yvonne,
The way to address this will of course, depend on why it's occuring in the first place. One thing that comes to mind is a hormonal imbalance, or fluctuation. So you could try something like evening primrose oil or similar- best to get more info about the supplements before you use them. Or a complementary therapy like homeopathy (I frequently treat people with this problem) or acupuncture could bring things back into balance. HTH Hom
Hello Yvonne
I agree with hom and also think it might be an hormonal imbalance. Estrogen dominance can occur post-natally, which gives rise to post-natal depression. Normally your body will address the balance in due course, however if your general health/lifestyle has not been ideal then your body may still have a degree of this post-natal hormonal imbalance.
If you are thinking of therapies, then I would recommend a short course of Reflexology or Acupuncture treatments - both are excellent at balancing the endocrine system and gives good results.
There are certain herbs which balance the hormones. I'm normally not keen on suggesting herbal supplements, since I'm not fond of the allopathic treatment model. However I have an exception with regard to [DLMURL="http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=4&prodid=449"]Agnus castus[/DLMURL] (aka chaste berry or Vitex). It is very effective at balancing your hormones - and needs to only be taken for a few months. Dosage is generally 2 capsules - always taken in the morning because that is when your liver is most active. Of course the usual caveats apply of underpinning any treatments or supplement programme with a nutritious diet, and healthy lifestyle.
To specifically address the estrogen dominance you may wish to consider Progesterone Cream - made from yams, I believe. You apply an 1/8th teaspoon to an area of soft skin (inner arm, inner thigh, stomach, breast) for the last 14 days of your cycle. The progesterone is absorbed transdermally. They have a 20-page booklet , which will help you decide whether it's right for you.
I know that you've specifically requested alternatives to lubrication - however Higher Nature makes a product, called V Gel, which is based on aloe vera.
Finally, you may find Dr Marilyn Glenville's site helpful.

Thanks Hom & Ava for your replies - will look into all that you have both suggested. I think myself that it's a hormonal problem as had terrible bleeding problems for a long time after having my daughter (kept on thinking it would just 'sort itself out' ). I do generally have a healthy diet/lifestyle but have been ill quite a lot since giving birth -altho' was very healthy when pregnant:confused:

Obviously a remedy to the root issue would be ideal with suggestions already posted, but without wanting to draw pictures...it doesn't have to be artificial lubricant, does it? Sometimes adjusting the sequence and style of lovemaking can help - and it is the opposite of clinical.
Root cause is the obvious direction to go, in the meantime, can I suggest saliva.
