Hi I have read some interesting information recently on oils to avoid during pregnancy and in labour. Geranium is to be avoided whilst on warfarin and heparin, lavender to be avoided whilst using an epidural, and nutmeg to be avoided whilst using pethidine. I am sure there are many more but my main concern in with Lavender.................I am looking into meternity reflexology and looking after mums to be using reflexology and there is so much conflicting advice out there.............my questions are these.
What oils should be avoided during pregnancy and labour?
Is the Lavender one to use after 12 weeks gestation?
Is it true Jasmine should be avoided with an epileptic person. I will also post this question on the aromatherapy board.
Many thanks

Hi, have replied to your other post but more specifically for this one -
- avoid any blood pressure lowering oils with epidurals - cos epidurals lower BP so potentially you could have a critically low BP situation.
- I've never come across Jasmine as a problem with epilepsy. (It is a useful oil to use in labour if the mother likes it ;))
- nutmeg is an hallucinogen so I suppose would cause bad trips if used with Pethidine!

hiya im not a midwife or aromatherapist but im a qualified product adviser for holland and barrett, part of our training involves knowledge of cautions of essential oils ,lavender, juniper jasmine, sage, rosmary frankingscence and myruh should all be avoided due to bringing on uterine contractions, another peace of advise rasberry leaf can be taken (with first prior consent from your gp or midwife)in the last four weeks of your pregnancy only as this will give you regular contractions, and less pain during your labour,i recommended this to a friend who had just gas and air and an hour labour, her prevoius labour without the rasberry leaf had complications and lasted two days, the caution is only safe for last few weeks of pregnancy or you could go into early labour, midwifes often pass mothers on to our shop,we also sell it in a tea,our advice on medications through your pregnancy would be dont use anything without prior consent from gp or midwife hope this is of use to you good kuck with the rest of your pregnancy and wish you safe delivery of your childxxx

As an aromatherapist I avoid ALL oils in pregnancy, as they eneter the blood stream they are too strong for an unborn baby!
Nutmeg is a banned oil, so no one should use it!
I'll get my notes and post what oilscan help during labour...
Hi
I am a Midwife reflexologist and I would not advise using aromatherapy oils unless you are fully trained to use the in pregnancy there are so many that can cause problems for baby and mother
