Hi everyone 🙂

Can I just ask if anyone here is taking Thyroxine and Losec? Reason being, blood tests show my thyroid levels are fine, yet I'm freezing cold, gaining weight etc (I'm taking 100 micrograms of thyroxine daily). Consultant wasn't bothered, she was only concerned that the blood tests looked ok on paper (cow!). Anyway, I wondered about these other drugs I'm on, so I looked up 'Thyroxine & Losec', and yes - taken together, the losec reduces the absorbtion of thyroxin because it reduces gastric acid secretions.

Has anyone else come across this? I can't stop taking either drug, so I need to work out when best to take them both and how far apart.

It's so annoying, being hypo. My hypo mates have all told me that I'll get really fat now - but at least the prescriptions will be free :(:(:(

🙂

Hi Erebemonsters and welcome to Healthypages,

Ok, first, bear in mind that throid issues are not something that are generally well understood by the medical community, so our doctors tend to do what they can based on what little knowledge they have, but of course it's an unknown quantity and can vary from person to person, so they can be struggling to help just as much as we struggle to cope with such issues. It's better if you can do your own research into things, get yourself armed with facts (make sure they're facts as much as possible rather than conspiracy, theories and speculations) and then go back with that information to discuss it with the doctor.
For example, what has the doctor tested for with the blood tests? Have they tested all of the TSH, T4 and the T3 levels? Are they just basing things on the figures returned? (I myself was borderline hovering just over and under the upper limit (UK limit, it's different in the US) for TSH and the T4 was low, but no test for T3. The doctor did correctly say that she wanted to monitor it and didn't just want to go on the numbers but on how I felt in myself (a doctor who thinks holistically, now there's a refreshing change!). However, she wasn't aware of the difference in limits that are used, so, I was hovering around the 6 for TSH (sometimes over, sometimes a little under) and she was considering that as "ok", but reading up on it, I found that the upper limit was sometimes condered to be 5 in other places in the UK, and was more around 4 in the US, which would have indicated I was clearly over the limit there. It seems there's no fixed agreed level by all the international experts in the field. Hence it needs to be based on the figures AND how you feel. If you're feeling bad still, even with the medication, then you need to get back to the doctor and express your concerns.

Anyway, I wondered about these other drugs I'm on, so I looked up 'Thyroxine & Losec', and yes - taken together, the losec reduces the absorbtion of thyroxin because it reduces gastric acid secretions.

Maybe a test of the T3 level will indicate how well the T4 is getting converted to T3. I've not come across Losec, so can't offer any advice regarding that.

Free prescriptions doesn't make up for the illness and how bad you can feel. I'm sure you'd much prefer to feel well.

It doesn't necessarily mean you will get fat. Whlist thyroid issues can cause you to have an increase in appetite, you can choose to monitor your calories and eat a balanced diet. It may take some effort, but if you want to do it then you will.

Hi and welcome to HP

Useful information there from Energylz. In fact I am less forgiving about NHS treatments for low thyroid!

If you read the other threads on thyroid problems and thyroxine you will see lots of advice is given and who to get second opinions from and so on. There is a lot more that can be done to support thyroid malfunction, not least of which is finding out why if at all possible. Sometimes other things need sorting before the thyroid will respond.

If after reading the other threads you still have questions - please ask and we shall try and help.
