Hi everyone can anyone give me any help, I am taking the two drugs for type II Diabetes, but although I am exercising 30 miutes a days and keeping to a healthy diet I am still not losing weight, but I have stopped the piogliazone as I continually have a fight not to eat after I take both tablets, something I can't cope with I am very overweight and need to lose around 10 stone.

Please could anyone tell me if they have had this problem, I am feel I should go and ask my doctor to change my tablets, I was on Metformin but had to come off as I was on the top dose and my kidneys were playing up, are there any tablets that will not make me hungry and not make me put on weight.

RE: Pioglitazone & Glipizide

My mom has early onset of diabetes, and i dont know much about the meds - and how they really affect the body - but some suggestions for loosing weight - keeping it off -

IMHO i have found that cutting a lot of sodium helps - as retaining water is one of my major body misfunctions with my thyroid disease - this helps to reduce water weight. Also, i dont eat a lot of beef anymore (maybe once a week) and started eating more ground turkey (only once a week) and fish (once a week) and chicken (twice a week). i get up at o' dark thirty (430am) for work - so i dont have time to excersise in the morning - i absolutley refuse to get up before then to do a workout! - so my workouts are in the evening...most of the time i will go to the gym before i eat dinner - but on the occasion i eat dinner when i get home and then go to the gym between 7-730. i am building back the tolarance though - as it is hard to make it everyday - but i try - even if it is just for 15 minutes.

i found alternate ideas throughout this forum for different recipies - like taking portobello mushroom caps (on the days you NEED a hamburger) and cooking it like you would a hamburger - fixing it the same - and it tastes better as well -

other than a change of eating habits and sodium intake, increase of excersise (remember muscle weighs more than fat - but when you start burning it will burn fast!) and a colon cleansing program (like [link= http://www.healthypages.net/forum/tm.asp?m=313401&mpage=7&key=&#413514 ]drnatura[/link]) i have managed to stop the increase of my weight - and turn it around.

feel free to pm me - anytime

i hope this helps - didnt mean to ramble on so - i get passionate sometimes when trying to help! hope i wasnt pushy!

Enjoy! and good luck!

RE: Pioglitazone & Glipizide

Hi Chrissy,

I would advise against stopping the pioglitazone. This can actually aid reducing LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase HDL cholesterol, - i.e. positively effect your lipid balance.
The Glipizide however, is more likely to lead to weight gain.
(Actually the least likely to cause weight gain is the Metformin, but as you correctly elluded to this should be avoided in people with kidney problems).

My recommendation would be to contact your local diabetes centre ( at the hospital ) for advice on adjusting your medication, and at the same time get a referral to their specialist dietitian to advise on a suitable healthy eating plan for you. Diabetic teams are exceptionally good at following up their patients, so you will be well looked after.

Most important is to maintain good control over your blood sugars, so I would not recommend missing tablets without discussing with your doctor. Blood sugars consistently over 11 can lead to some severe complications - heart problems, kidney problems, vascular problems, sensation problems - so please be careful about your sugar control.
