I found my biggest stress when I was out of work. I needed to be at work, even though at times it was very stressy. I spent nearly every day applying for jobs until I found one and I became happy again. I think a lot of stress is caused when someone drops out of his/her comfort zone. Definitely.
Absolutely. It is more common than you think. I had one about 5 years ago. Similar situation with job and boyfriend and even friends. Nothing seemed right anymore and things went into a deep decline. Looking back now I see it was a spiritual purge..out with the old and in with the new..Its not a nice experience but we survived and it teaches us deeply about ourselves. I like to do a lot of daoist meditation now, letting go and practicing dissolving techniques. Really really useful x
Beautiful. So right. I think I agree with Paul as well that when there is conflict with our inner selves & our external situations feel wrong it's time to move on. We have obviously outgrown our old relationships, jobs & patterns.
They are inventions and very modern ones too.
There are several modern inventions of similar nature. What cannot be dealt with simplicity of common sense is classified, labelled then several methods approaches to rectify the same are employed.
'Low self esteem' is now such an established concept that millions across the globe are recognising g it within themselves and painstakingly trying to eradicate it too.
ADHD, attention disorders etc come under same category of inventions.Therapy and self growth has given amazing concepts and things that need working on.
Can't believe I missed your reply 'Inventions implies they are NOT real. Are you saying low self esteem does NOT exist?

Or perhaps the stress is because of an attachment to a perceived idea (as Jnani says, an 'invention') of what is a 'comfort zone'. What do you think would have happened if you'd let go of that attachment to your 'comfort zone'? I'm guessing you would have found comfort in what you had instead. 😉

Yes. It does not exist other than in identification of it and going down the rabbit hole of trying to eradicate it and convert it into high self esteem. Both high and low esteem are just concepts.

I am not sure I understand......and I suspect we will just have to agree to differ

They can exist and the person with them can be helped. But labelling can make something that is a completely reasonable way of reacting to (often unreasonable) circumstance into a "mental health issue" and a medical problem.

Sally,
It's about duality. Things simply exist all as one until mankind invents categories and labels things by creating a duality. With humans being so diverse and different, what one person calls 'high self esteem' could be seen as something negative by another, when looked at through dualistic eyes. As something can't be both positive and negative at the same time, it can't really exist except as the one thing without any labels.
It's a bit like the duck billed platypus. Scientists came across it and called it a freak of nature, and thought there was something wrong with it, simply because it lays eggs but also suckles it's young. The duck billed platypus was just being a duck billed platypus and didn't have any problem being itself... the problem was with the scientists who wanted to categorise it and label it, but ended up having to give it a category of it's own... the monotremata (and later they found the spiny anteater was also the same, but that's the only two creatures in that category)
Labels serve little purpose but to create duality, and where duality exists, conflict exists, simply because some put themselves on one side and others on the other side.

Labels are necessary in order to talk about things - imagine this conversation if we didn't have the label "low-self esteem" whether we believe it exists or not. "Duality" is a label also.
It's a clever trick to manage to use labels without falling into the trap of thinking this makes the labelled 'thing' more important and powerful than it needs to be.
I don't care about labels...I care about helping feel better and move on from where they perceive themselves to be. So if describing how they feel as 'low self esteem' helps us communicate effectively , all that matters is that we both understand the same thing to be meant by that phrase.

The trouble is, you are never certain that both of you do understand the same thing to be meant by the phrase.
We give power to those things we focus on. And people often like to think that they have an "accepted problem". So what could be just a natural part of human existence - we all feel "low self esteem" occasionally and some people more than occasionally and it can be dealt with - suddenly acquires Capital Letters.
I can understand this. Basically everything is just thought forms & ideas.
You are what you think you are.
Society / media also tries to condition us to think in a certain way, chip at our confidence etc so we think we are not good enough. Handy if you can see through the illusion I feel 🙂
I agree words have huge power....and that if someone else labels you with a term like 'low self esteem' it can affect how you think about yourself. That does NOT mean there are not people whose view of themselves is very negative BEFORE anything like that phrase enters their life.
I presume we CAN all agree that 'self esteem' is real.

Rather like the medicalisation of natural events like the menopause. I can agree with THAT. FWIW I would never use the phrase 'low self esteem' I would suggest they have self esteem issues. (I presume we can all agree 'self esteem' is real.) That does NOT mean that 'low self esteem' does not sometimes cause massive problems for some people.
