Saw the GP today to get my repeat prescription. Why do I find the whole process traumatic and am left feeling frustrated and angry?
They come across all caring but when I try to tell them how I'm feeling they cut me off and go off on something else and I then don't get to say what I need to say to them so nothing gets resolved.
Why do I return to them time and time again for help and get nowhere. I'm seriously fed up now, I've spent the day sobbing my heart out due to the frustration they cause and their questioning me about whether I've "thought about harming myself" just makes me wonder if I lie and say "well actually yes..." would they actually start to listen? The only harm I'm causing to myself is going back to the GP every month, out of desperation because I haven't found a natural alternative as yet.
Think I need to go lick my wounds and self-sooth to get over todays trauma. Thanks for listening. x
You are not alone on your thoughts, I have had clients expressed similar experiences as yourself, Its sometimes usually the case with GP's possibly a combination of time allocated to each patient and a need of further or refreshed training in identifying certain behaviours and listening..
Sometimes being asked if you have felt suicidal tendencies/self harm etc is a part of an automated computer assesment which apparentley presents a result of the patients condition and medical conclusion based on your answers.
What ever happened to the doctors of yesteryear who did have time for their patients. To really be listened to and understood works wonders.
I have found a few gems in the GP profession over the years but they never seem to be long where they are, they are either newly qualified getting more experienced or interim ones filling in gaps.
I was just settling with one GP surgery where I always opted for the training GP for consultations because the meetings were recorded and so you got more attention, but we moved at the end of last year and I'm back to square one with a satellite GP surgery who are just winding me up at the moment.
I found out once I got there that my prescription I needed had been put on repeat without them telling me so I didn't need to even go through today's trauma. But it was too late by the time I found out.
I won't be going back to the GP surgery unless I'm dead basically, I'm that annoyed with them. I can appreciate that they have to ask this question for those with depression but it does kind of feel like they are putting thoughts into your head or that they won't do anything until you are at the point of such desperation of wanting to harm yourself. Just so frustrating.
Much calmer having had my little rant here and Thank you for replying. x
My good GP left a few months back to go back to her homeplace in Ireland, which was a shame as she was the only one who really listened.
One thing that helps when you do go to the GP is to go prepared. Write down beforehand everything you want to talk about, at least as bullet points so that you can go down the list with them and make sure you don't forget stuff you wanted to say.
And don't lie to them about wanting to self harm... the last thing you need on your record is them recording you as a self harmer or suffering from depression, as in the future, if some situation arises where you're upset about something, they could go down the wrong route of treatment.

Depression is already in my notes as well as thoughts of self-harm. But I'm older and wiser and know that that is not the solution even to lie about it, but the way they ask it does make you feel like your being prompted to say yes just to trigger them into listening.
Feeling much much more calm about it now, having vented on here and to my sister. Getting into my research now as to how to get away from all orthodox medicine as I do feel that what I'm on is masking the issue rather than getting to the underlying problem. The GP already knows I don't accept their word that in my case this is the solution. I'm so stubborn.
If I ever need to go to the GP, I think I'm going to bullet point everything I want them to discuss with me so thanks for the tip Energylz. I can hand it to them saying I want each one commented on before I leave and if its a long list I'll just ask for a double appointment. I need double appointments for the very few occasions I permit them to take blood.
I am speaking now as a pharmacist when I say anti-depressnats don't cure depression. BUT what they can do is help you think more constructively about things. I spent 10 years on and off antidepressants - but it was NLP and self hypnosis that finally helped me to break the cycle and come off them. I have STAYED off them since 1st Jan 2008 and did not need to go back on them despite 3 bereavements and a cancer diagnosis over the next 3 years.
If you could find a hypnotherapist you could trust I feel hypnotherapy could be very beneficial to you but there is no magic wand. Hypnotherapy will give you tools you can use - but they do need to be used.
But like me staying on the anti-depressnats until you get confident in using the tools could be very beneficial.
I do hope you can find the help you need
Thanks Tashanie,
I'm now off the anti-depressants though the GP is trying to prescribe me another one, but I don't want to continue with them any more, they aren't going to resolve the issue just make things more manageable. I was taking them for PMS rather than depression. I was on Citalopram but the GP was worried that there would be a reaction to the Amitriptyline which was prescribed for chronic headaches (Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)). So he took me off Citalopram and tried to put me on Fluoxetine.
You may be able to answer this one actually. What is the difference between Citalopram and Fluoxetine and the risk of a negative reaction with Amitriptyline?
I'm now looking for a solution to the chronic headaches so that I can come off the Amitriptyline too.
I am going to make a couple of suggestions that will be insulting and not seem like they have anything to do with this post. But just think about it a day before you drill me a new one :rollaugh:
Eliminate msg (you will have to go on line to find all the names for it) and aspartame (and all artfical sweetners) from your diet. And give gratitude (thank you will suffice) every morning (and every night) reaching up and back in a big stretch, breathing deeply and then slowly touch your toes. Put a water filter on your kitchen sink, make lemon/lime aid from the fruit or tea and use stevia to sweeten it. I won't insult you further by saying drink water. Just gradually drink your drinks more diluted 🙂 use filtered water for your ice. If you have an ice machine put an inline filter on it.
A self healing reiki session as you are going to sleep is the iceing on the cake.
If you do this for a week or two (and it's really hard); do a self assessment and see if you feel better. Doctors are taught about illness...we are taught about welness 🙂 please conciter this with my best wishes :1kis:
To add:
MSG in the UK generally goes on the labels of products either as Monosodium Glutamate or as the E number E621.

Not offended... I already avoid MSG where I can identify it, its funny how its often labelled "flavourings" "citric acid" etc. Its a well hidden one. I make a lot of meals from scratch to avoid it.
I avoid sweeteners like aspartame as I'm intolerant to it and know within minutes now if I consume it by mistake. Bleugh! lol Thankfully accidental consumption is a very rare occurrence. I'm an avid label reader.
Our water into the house is natural spring so no chemicals are in it other than maybe copper from the pipes. I tend to drink my water hot rather than cold, its just the way I prefer it (and I don't mean as a tea or coffee, it is just hot water).
I do give myself regular Reiki and have stepped this up since seeing the GP last. I haven't returned since my chat with them that created my vent on here. I'm still on the Amitriptyline for the headaches and I've stepped up my aromatherapy to combat when I feel the pain. I don't take pain-relief unless absolutely necessary. In the next few months I will be reducing the Amitriptyline too. They tried to hand my husband the anti-depressants for me when he collected the prescription of amitriptyline, but I'd already warned him that he was to reject it if given which he dutifully did, I then called them up and told them straight I don't want them and they are to take the prescription off my notes. I'm waiting for them now to refuse me my Amitriptyline prescription until I've seen them again, which has occurred for me in the past.
It sounds like you are very proactive in your self care. I'm sorry you still feel so bad. I love the lemon/lime aid made from real fruit. I feel I like it helps.
I'm sorry I don't have any other ideas except. Send me a picture and I'll send you reiki...if you'd like. My email is on my website.
My daughter and I magnify each other and we can send to you. It may be a week or two before we are together. It works best when we are in the same place. If we are apart we can. Piggyback each other but it works best when we are together.
Awww... That's very kind. Thank you
I'm not doing too bad, in another thread Magnesium therapy was suggested so I've been having magnesium salt baths maybe 3 times a week and it does seem to balance me out much more than I thought it would. Especially around that time of the month. I've been researching PMS which was the main reason for the anti-depressants so I've been taking a variety of herbal remedies leading up which has also helped by balancing those troublesome hormones.
I will get my headaches under control again, previously I've tried Reflexology which has really helped, the only reason I'm not pursuing that line currently is the distance it is to the lady who treated me before. I'm also so busy with work I can't really take 3 and a half hours out to travel to, have a treatment and then travel home again. Which is a real shame. I plan to learn reflexology myself, maybe it won't be quite the same but I'd be able to keep myself topped up between visits to a therapist.
I've never been one for going to the Dr's unless its absolutely necessary (I have to be desperate), but the whole experience has put me off even further.
How depressing... I can't even give it away. No really. I can't even give reiki away for free.

I didn't reject the offer....I just hadn't gotten round to sending you my pic. Actually my pic is on my website. 😉
I will take that as permission 🙂
I do have 1 more thought...your water would have been the greatest of all waters years ago but with the chem trails (see other threads) their may be heavy metals in your water now. You might want to get it tested or add the filter to your tap.
OK 2 thoughts...the lemon/lime aid that I make is like a tonic...sort of. I use a half of a lemon and a half of lime per glass (a really big glass and then a little stevia). That's a lot of vitamin C. When we are ill; we go through a lot of vit. C. It's not stable in the body and what we don't use goes through us. So I drink this as my drink; or tea with lemon and lime juice in it all the time.
I will be at my daughters tomorrow and we can send tomorrow night. A healer may need to experience illness to have empathy but I also believe that to be healed is also a necessary experience and a gift the universe is willing to give every healer (unless there is a karmic lesson in play).
When my daughter and I send tomorrow night (your morning); it will be for your greatest good. So the healing may be in relief from your symtoms, or the knowledge that you need to fix this yourself. Or you may get the message that you are holding emotional or psychic pain on one or more levels and need to let these old wounds heal or go. So listen...there may be a message. Write it down. There are no silly thoughts.
You are in a state of dis ease. You are very proactive about correcting it. It seems like a simple suggestion but play healing music in your car and home (you are probably already doing that). So the goal thought for my daughter and I is to bring you back to a state of peace and calm, wholeness, joy and welness.
These will be our thoughts for you when we send. I will send a PM right before we do it. The first time my daughter sent to me I almost fell down (but that was emotionally driven). I just wouldn't want you to be driving.
