What a sad posting this is going to be .. sorry !
I invited my sister to come for a rare visit today, she was in need of some stress relief and light banter. My mother has three little dogs she loves dearly, she battles with a serious illness and the pets are very precious to her. My mother is on a little holiday with dad and one of the dogs, my sister is looking after the other two and brought them both with her.
One has gone missing. We were at the chicken coup gathering the eggs, I came in, she thought he was with me,, but he wasn't. He is a very old dog, 17, with some ailments, including being deaf, so he wouldn't hear us calling for him. We live in a very rural area where there are lots of ditches and dangers for an old weak dog. We have searched everywhere, in the wastelands, the brambles the ditches, all farm buildings asked the neighbours. OH and DD searched too when they came in from work
Not only is it sad that we cannot find him, but, we are also going to have to make up a story to our mother. She couldn't bear to think he was missing in this way, and she has enough to cope with, so we are going to have to fib and say we have had him put to sleep. He hasn't been well, no bladder control and his deafness etc, but they wouldn't put him to sleep. I said to my sister, perhaps he was meant to come here today...a very rare event indeed....in order to leave us. It still leaves a mighty bruise in the heart though, and doubt we will sleep much 🙁
Hi Fleur,
Don't give up hope. Perhaps he comes back. You never know with pets. He surely will be hungry at some stage and might find his way back to you especially if the other two dogs are with you as well. Are the other dogs looking for him i.e. missing him?

The other dog has gone back with my sister Zimba, they live a long way away, but she says the remaining one going crazy at home running round looking for him. They have been together for many years. He went missing about 2.00 this afternoon. I really don't think he will live through the night....so unless someone somewhere has picked him up and taken him to animal rescue ,or home, , I cannot see us getting him back. He really is quite weak, he has urine problems and dehydrates quickly, so without water:(. My sister has just told me she will tell mum the truth of what happened probably when she comes back from her hols....
Oh dear, really feel for you, being a pet owner myself I know how it feels when they go missing.
Think it's a wise decision to tell your mum the true story, when she is back from her holidays.

May I suggest contacting your local animal rescue centres, veterinary surgeon practices, and the local council for their dog warden. Also try posting here:
and put an ad in your local paper. People also use noticeboards for posters on lost animals in eg local shops and post offices, lamp posts even.
I do so hope he's found, but old dogs can get very disorientated in new surroundings, especially if they're deaf. I've nursed a number of oldies through their last months, weeks and days, and so do have some experience of this.
Should a similar situation arise with the other dogs - and I don't know how old they are - I'd recommend a long lead at all times other than in a totally secure garden.

My heart goes out to you. I've been in a similar situation, which fortunately resolved itself.
There has been lots of good advice, all I can say my thoughts are with you and hope you find him soon.

My thoughts are with you and I hope doggy turns up soon.
My parents neighbours have a very old bit senile dog, who took himself off for a wander, he turned up a week later a bit paw sore and hungry but other than that fine. No-one expected him to turn up. Make sure everyone knows the dog is lost and what he looks like then at least if someone finds him they know who to contact.
My prayers are with doggy and I hope he's safe and comes back soon.

Ah Fleur, how sad for you all. All I can do is send reiki and loving thougths to you all and may some miracle happen that the dog is found.

So sorry to hear about this, Fleur. How sad. But maybe he did indeed take himself off to a private end. On the other hand, maybe he'll turn up. Anything is possible. But better to tell your Mum the truth I would think. Keep us posted.

Hi all,,thank you for your kind words.
No sign of him, but it was freezing overnight:(. Have contacted all relevant authorities, local vets, sanctuaries etc...
I have been at work all day, but my sister came back here and did another search....brought his bed and put it outside near the door in case he should be alive and catch the scent. We have asked all neighbours. But for a weak old dog, we do really live in a place where he could go to take cover....but he is/was? very disorientated anyway....
Sighs............
Have you tried the local council's dog warden? They also collect lost dogs.
Coincidentally we had a lost dog appear yesterday, but fortunately we managed to get him reunited with his owner. He was a good mile and half from home.
There is still hope. 😉

Where abouts has the dog gone missing? Any news?
So sorry to hear this Fleur. Sending reiki for a good outcome.
