Hello friends,

I'm reaching out for some help regarding someone that's reached out to me for help aha!

My partner's Mum has messaged me asking how she can start to deal with panic attacks she's been having. She's asked me not to tell him as he'll worry (which is fine) and she knows I should be able to help as I've suffered from Generalised Anxiety Disorder with Panic for around a decade now.
She has a history of depression/anxiety and even agoraphobia since she was young (she's now in her 40's) but has never had panic like this before. One situation she described to me was "I was going to my mums n i sat with car keys for hour in hand before could get in car. Said to self if i didnt im sellin car. Got here but was dizzy n dots in eyes sweating". Some of her symptoms are relatable to me, and I think I understand on some level what she's going through, but I'm sure you all find that it's a very personal journey and we all find our own coping mechanisms. She's not quite sure if there's anything specific causing them at the moment but she does talk to a counsellor regularly and has good contact with her GP, and is thinking it might be leaving the house/cars/people.

I've suggested things that I find helpful, such as not fighting the attacks as they tend to get worse if I do, and even asking her GP about Propranalol, as it's been a lifesaver in situations where my panic is out of control and I need to carry on with my day-to-day life. We actually live around 4 hours away, so I can't even get there to talk her through things and give her a hug.

I was wondering how I can go about helping her to figure out what will work best for her, as despite going through most of it myself, I still find it very difficult helping others out. She's an amazing lady that's brought up my better half on her own and done a damn good job of it and I really want to help her out in anyway that I can. Does anyone have any tips?

Thank you

HOListicKate

I am assuming she does not know basic info on how to deal with this situation then. There is SO much info online on this! Has she tried a google search of 'dealing with panic attacks?' If she cannot go online, perhaps you can get this info for her.....so many websites!

Has she seen anyone (a doctor? Or a therapist? A shaman?) about this? It's a hard thing to tackle without help.
