Hello [sm=wave.gif],
I work on a computer all day long and am a left hander. I noticed when going to pilates/yoga thatI can not support my body on my hands/arms (even when on my knees) as my left wrist is really hurting :(. Do you think this is computer/mouse related and can I do anything to make it better?
Many thanks for any advice.
Fafinka 🙂
P.S. I posted this onto the general exercie too (not sure why, :eek:huh - maybe connection to yoga/pilates? Ooops)
RE: Painful wrist
Hi Fafinka,
I would watch out for that. You really don't want it toget worse. Sounds like RSI orCarpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Book yourselfa few massage treatments, preferably someone with Trigger Point Techniques. You could also go and see Osteopath or even Chiro.
It's a good idea for you to hold your mouse with right hand so that you give your left hand some rests. I know it's frustrating but you may just have to get used to it.
Good luck!
Starlight
RE: Painful wrist
hi Fafinka, I'm a Pilates teacher and I've noticed as the years go by that more and more of my new students have weak wrists, and I do put it down to use of the mouse and the keyboard.
I ask my clients to put their hands into a prayer position and push against the heels of their hands. this strengthens the wrists. (everyday for a few minutes will be helpful)
Sharon.
RE: Painful wrist
Oh my God Starlight, you are scaring me! RSI / CTS – I have to look them up…
It does not hurt whilst using the mouse, just when doing anything else, but I might try to change hands (I will be very slow at work)
Sharon, I tried this prayer position and when I push, I can feel the wrist hurting. Do you think this will improve with time?
It actually occurred to me that when I was a kid, I hurt my wrist while dancing on a chair and I fell down. Apparently it was not fractured, “just” cracked. I do not know which wrist this was, I have to ask my mum…
RE: Painful wrist
Hello - to add to the list of lovely therapies that you could try, The Bowen Technique can help with wrist problems (and lots of other stuff!). There should be a therapist not too far from you.
As well as doing exercises to strengthen your wrist and thinking about work with the mouse limiting your movement and strength, please also try to open up and stretch your shoulders as much as possible. Your posture when you are working at the computer may be contributing to the problem. Conditions such as RSI can often be started much higher up in the body than where the symptoms are presenting.
Yeah - everyone stretch now! Rotate the shoulders back and relax.
:Ddibs
RE: Painful wrist
Dear Fafinka - a crack even not completely broken is still a fracture.
You could try the HP Forum Search facility top of page for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & RSI.
There are several Threads on both conditions with ideas & advice.
If it's the same wrist that you previously injured, then that would make it more prone to such problems, but they're usually straight forward to treat.
Andrew.
RE: Painful wrist
RSI = ? Repetitive Strain Injury
Is not a medically accurate term and doctors do not use it.
You could have a more specific condition such as carpal Tunnel Syndrome or De Quervain's Tenosynovitis (depending what side the wrist pain is on). I would suggest you see your GP and ask for a referral to an Upper Limb Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon.
RE: Painful wrist
Farfinka, yes it should improve, Sharon.
RE: Painful wrist
Hello,
Well, I checked both CTS and RSI on the net, and I do not think that it is that serious. I am trying to take it easy when using computer, at home I use laptop so I am not using the mouse at all there (very difficult for playing games...).
Sharon, I think it hurts a little less now, I shall keep doing the prayer position.
Thak you all.
Fafinka
