Hi all,
I'm new around these here parts, :Dbut I was hoping someone could come up with an answer for me?
I am waking up in the a.m. with severe bilateral elbow pain. It actually feels like Glass, or splinters are embedded in my elbows. Right in the cartilage part, not medial or lateral. Right in the middle! Unfortunately, I sleep with my elbows continuously bent up under my pillow. A difficult habit to break.
As the day goes on, the pain diminishes, but it is still there mildly. (Until tomorrow a.m.!)
Any ideas? This just started about 3 weeks ago.
I am currently only on one med. which is synthroid, due to radioactive iodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. I have taken NO medication for this.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
RE: feels like glass in my elbows!
I'm not familliar with that particulat medication, but would guess that it's thyroxine (T4) replacement. Typically they destroy more thyroid than necessary as an underactive thyroid is easier to control than an overactive one.
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is associated with joint pain/inflammation. After moving for sometime the inflammation is able to drain better from the area, so it eases off.
It sounds like you could be aggravating it with your sleeping posture, so suggest persist in trying to break the habit. It may even have been a subconscoius stratergy to relieve it before you became aware of the discomfort.
If it's just your elbows, then seeing an osteopath to improve the mobility may well settle it down. If you don't fancy that, then suggest TCM Acupuncture.

RE: feels like glass in my elbows!
Thank for the reply.
I'm thinking it's related to lifting 2# weights. So I decreased them to 1#
(Why is it we try to improve out bodies, and we get this message to stop it???LOL)
RE: feels like glass in my elbows!
Ease up for a while maybe, but we should never stop trying improve ourselves until we are content, that is. 😀

RE: feels like glass in my elbows!
Hello !
I just feel that you have arthritic elbows especially since the signs are those of degenerative (and not inflammatory) arthritis . Why don't you have elbow x-rays and have them reviewed by an Orthopaedic Surgeon?
Regards

Thank you for your replies.
I haven't done any exercise for a week now, and still on occasion having the problem.
I do think it can be arthritis, and if it keeps up, I will see my family Dr.
It isn't incapacitating me, it's just bothersome, and painful.
I am taking ibuprofen, hoping to reduce iflammation.
Gee, I really hope it's NOT arthritis as I am only 55 yrs. old.
