Hi,
I used to have tinitus when I was younger, but it went away and in October I took to jogging in the morning which meant I was using my ipod every day. I got tinnitus so decided to stop using my ipod that was before Christmas. Now I still have tinnitus and it seems to be getting worse! Im going mad!
Can anyone suggest anything? I have thought about Hopi Ear candles, do they work?
Thanks!
Sam

Hiya Sam

How I do feel for you, says she with ringing in her ears

Some times Hopi candles can help, I find that normally they do but the last time I had it done it didn't help as much. If you keep busy and occupied it can at times help to block the noise.

Try the Hopi candles even if they don't work it's a lovely therapy

I have tinnitus and I've just learned to live with it unfortunately. Whilst my business is growing, I also have a part time PA job where I do a lot of audio typing and often have to have the volume up high as the dept is quite noisy.

I tried hopi ear candles but they didn't work. Reiki does lessen the noise but as I am constantly bombaring my ears, the ringing often comes back, particularly if I go to a concert, do lots of audio, use my iPod, even just got to the pub.

For me, its just something to live with. I starting Bowen training soon and have heard that Bowen may help so will report back if it does.

I've had tinnitus all my life though I didn't know it until about 20 years ago! I thought everyone had noises in their head!

I would love to hear the silence. I am deaf and all I have is extremely high pitched squeaking all the time. I have only a very tiny amount of hearing, not all of it useful, and I agree, when there are other things going on you are not concentrating on the noises in your head. The worst time is at night when the continual noise seems to increase in volume! Masking did not work. I don't think there is a cure. I suppose it depends on the cause.

I do hope you manage to get rid of yours again. It must be awful to have had the silence and then get your tinnitus back. I do remember reading somewhere (can't remember where) that headphones can cause problems. May be worth investigating. Jogging is high impact. Are your shoes springy enough to lessen the impact?

I'm a sufferer too, and like Maggie I've always had it - it was some time before I realised it wasn't normal. My brother and mum have it too, so maybe there is a family link.

I read few years ago that gingko biloba can help. I bought some but then found out it shouldn't be used with high blood pressure, and mine was borderline high at the time, so I never ended up taking any. Might be worth googling it and seeing what you can find.

I have had good results with a lady I was treating with Indian head massage. She had been a tinnitus sufferer - it got worse when she was stressed. She reported that the regular treatments helped her tinnitus and nowadays she says it hardly bothers her. I'm not saying this is guaranteed to help everyone, but it may be worth a try - however you would probably need at least four treatments a week apart initially to give it a fair chance.
Good luck!

Hi all,

Hormones ?? .... I've recently treated three different ladies ... all with either Tinitus or Labyrinthitis and all three have been going through the menopause. Once the hormones were brought back into some balance the condition righted itself !!

In chinese medicine the kidney meridian (which is responsible amongst other things for the reproductive hormones) ends in the ear !! It's not uncommon for folks with hormonal imbalance to suffer from ear conditons .... ranging from itchy ears to Tinitus !!

Obviously there are other factors which play a part in Tinitus ... but just a thought !!

Do you have buzzing or screeching in your ears or head?

Around 7 million people in the UK also have tinnitus, so you are not alone. You can share your tinnitus experiences with others, understand more about it and learn about things that can help, by using the RNID’s community Answers forum at

Hi Sam,

My sister has the same problem but got loads of improvement by visiting an atlasprofilax therapist. It's a one time treatment which basically adjusts the "atlas" (first vertebrae in the spinal cord below your skull). after that the noise inside her head/ears decreased quite a bit.

I know how annoying something like that can be no matter how soft the noise may be.

Good luck!!!!

There was a programme about this on TV a few years ago and I seem to recall that the most effective treatment was homeopathy. Could be worth a try.

Thank you for all of the answers, Im sorry to hear that so many people suffer with this.

I am interested by your comment about the hormone imbalance. Hopefully I am not menopausal as Im only 27, although I am on the contraceptive pill which can cause problems with hormones.

Recently I have had bad skin and small spots around my chin, which I think is associated to hormones aswell. I have been on the pill for a long time, but the tinitus and the spots are fairly recent.

Any ideas for balancing hormones?!

Hi Sam

For balancing hormones I would advice Reflexology.

Tinnitus is a very difficult condition to treat, however, Hopi Ear Candling can help, but you need to give it a chance.
For a lot of people the noise is triggered by stress and you might benefit from having relaxing treatments.

All the best,
Mascha

This time last year my eldest daughter (who was 6 at the time) asked me if everyone has this buzzing in their ears? Someone had mentioned something to make her wonder if what she thought was normal, maybe wasn't at all.
I took her to a cranial osteopath who cured it completely in 2 sessions. She said that she had always had it & now has never had it since. Cranial osteopathy is very gentle & non invasive & worked amazingly for my daughter. It's also great for Glue Ear. I recommended it for my friends child who was about to have another set of grommets replaced, she took her for a session (don't know how many) & now she doesn't need them anymore.

My heart goes out to all those who suffer from it.

Hi sam

interesting meridianmoon mentions the kidney meridian ending in the ear, and you saying about small spots on the chin, I also get these; was reading in Gillian McKeith's You are What you Eat that this is indicative of kidney needing attention. She recommends eating aduki beans amongst other things. Have a look at her book, it contains loads of really interesting info and ideas for boosting your body.

I would also say that perhaps some deeper work would help. (Although I have tried hopi candles and they felt great, like releasing or some sort of vent). Any symptom can be addressed if we look to the root cause - I (and many others) have experienced good results with bioenergy healing, which doesn't even require any investigation into why or how we have cultivated a particular issue, it just gets on with the work on a deep circuitry level, to alleviate the presenting problems.

The last bit applies to your enquiry too norman!

Hope you both are making some headway with your investigations.

Best wishes
sapna

As a trained hop-ear therapit I would recommend you visit one in your area and have the treatment. It has excellent results in this area - although it is recommended you have three treatments and then just top up when necessary. Hope this helps

Hi Norman
I am no expert on cranial osteopathy, just a very happy user! What i can say is that it just very gentle manipulation. After the staggering results on two of my children, i took my newborn twins for it too. Just to give them a gentle head massage to help ease them after the birth. I know lots of people, adults & children that have benefited greatly from it. I'm sure there will be a forum on here designated to it. I hope you've found it already. I am confident for you that you will find your 'cure' out there! Good luck.

Hi Norman, I have menieres - it's the pits, I've just had to retire from the NHS early on ill health with it.
Have you joined the menieres society or at least checked out their web site? it helped me a lot just knowing I wasn't going crazy with some of the weird symptoms and knowing there were others with it.
I tried Hopi ear candles but it didn't really make any difference but the therapist became a friend and I am now studying for the VTCT Holistic therapies Diploma
The best advice is to look very carefully at your lifestyle - it has a huge impact on your symptoms (especially to tinnitus- incidentally, using personal music players at a comfortable volume level is recommended to tinnitus sufferers during quiet periods, especially at night) try meditation, reiki anything which slows you down and makes you relax - your body's telling you to look after yourself!! Tinnitus and menieres make you feel isolated - just remember you're not alone! :grouphug:

tinnitus is just an awful horrible condition

Hi - I am new here but I am glad to find I am not alone suffering with tinnitus. It is horrible, one of the worst things I have had try to come to terms with is finding it nearly impossible to get off to sleep - I am half mad with the ringing in my ears and desperate for sleep. In the end I had to resort to sleeping tablets from the chemist and am now hooked on them. The only other thing that has helped is a cd of very gentle music and nature sounds which masks the ringing and tinnitus enough for me to block it our (I got it off cdbaby.com and its called sleep easy.) If anyone has ANY help or suggestions on how to cope with this condition I would be grateful to hear from you, with thanks for this useful site, Robert.

I have been posting recently in the Back Problems section!

I have had Tinnitus for about 5 years. Somedays I forget that it is there, but it gets worse when I take a lot of painkillers - which for someone who has suffered from a bad back is a bit annoying!

I too have tried many different therapies - especially in the early days. But in truth I have just learned to live with it - I suppose it has become almost like an old friend. Luckily I have good hearing so general noise and music etc drowns out most of it, and I have got so used to it over the years that I hardly notice it at all. Although there is a lower level to my hearing - certain quiet sounds are drowned out by the Tinnitus so I tend to like stuff louder than most people.

It may seem impossible to live with at first, but in time - perhaps 6 months or so - you will suddenly one day realise that you have forgotten the noise in your head. When you remember that it is there you will hear it, but you will soon learn to live with it and it will become just another part of you. At the moment you may feel like it is defining you, but trust me you will learn to accept it and like I said it will almost become like an old friend.

Best of luck with it, but I promise you - it will get better.

Tinnitus may be helped by Acupuncture

Hi Maggie

Have you considered having Acupuncture treatment? You may already know this but it has been used in China for over 3000 years for many conditions such as Tinnitus, Facial Paralysis, Meniere's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, ME, MS, Asthma, etc....

All the very best,

Priti

Sorry if this has been suggested before, but hopi ear candles has a great effect on this.

Worth seeking a therapist for this.

Good luck I hope you get rid of the problem soon.

Hi
I'm hypnotherapist practising hypnoanalysis. I have had two clients recently suffering from this condition. In both cases it was caused by tension and the tension was coming from a feeling of emotional conflict from within. it was almost like a part of them was crying out for help and saying you will have to listen to me now.
If you feel that your life is ok but there is a cloud of discomfort hanging over you then this may be worth checking out.
I am a great believer in the mind body connection and alwys try to relate symptoms to thought processes. See the latest healthy pages newsletter.
Hope this helps.

tinnitus and backache

I would say that the long term back ache has eventually created tension in the head area and is causing the tinnitus. Why have you got back ache and where abouts is it. Go onto the search engines and look up emotions associated with back ache. Depending on where it is it sounds like a fear of moving forward and probably in your head you are desperate to move on.

Hello
My parents have a neigbour that has suffered with tinnitus throughout life and is partially deaf. She recently had therapy to help deal with the annoyance and stress it was causing her, and they suggested that she tune out of the ringing, and introduce a song instead. So she can hear "build me up buttercup" all day, and it's far easier to ignore.
I think it took some time, but try turning the irritating noise into a bearable, positive noise instead.
Hope that helps,
Sarah x

Hi

A simple change in diet can work wonders with tinnitus.

Try cutting back on salt, caffine and diet drinks or foods with asparteme in as this aggrevates tinnitus.

If you want to see someone ask your local hospital if they have a hearing therapist as they will be able to help

Good luck

Deb
