Hello my son aged 13 has suffered from migraines occasionally for about 4 years now. I have found his triggers are stress, overtiredness and growth spurts. The last few attacks he has had were stressful situations ie: exams, theme park with friends(he hates rides but was pressured into goinf on some and ended up with a migraine later that day) and starting a new school. He is due to go on his first school trip abroad and
the flight is at 5am in the morning which means we need to get up at 2am, i am worried that with the excitement, stress and early start it may provoke a migraine and I despearately want to help him prevent it with either homepathy, vitamins or anything anyone can suggest. Thankyou in advance for anyone that may advise me.

There's a very good book called "Migraines and Epilepsy" by Jan De Vries, which explains the different types and what can be done to help.

Bless your son. I know how he feels. I used to suffer terribly from migraines and had similar triggers. The book recommended is very good as I have read it through also.

Ensure your son is well hydrated, eats small regular meals to maintain sugar levels.

Has your son been seen by a GP/Consultant? There are some prophylactic medication which can control the number of migraines. Worth looking into if the migraines interfere with his quality of life.

Thankyou for your reply yes he has been seen by our gp and has antisickness tablets to take along with recommendation to take paracetemol+ibuprofen together at first signs. I gavent asked gp for any preventatives as yet but may take a visit to see. I will try to get him to have a few early nights prior to the trip and even concidered giving him ibuprofen the nught before to see if maybe that would work. I pray he wont get one and im more worried than him but id hate for him to have to deal with it whilst away from me.

Hi Sundancer, sorry to hear of your childs suffering. I too suffered from migraines from the age of 9 years - 12 years which i believe were bought on by a move to a new area , new school, etc.
Homeopathy helped me alot had one session which cleared them away then a booster 3 years later and to this day i have not had a recurrence as strong.
It is also good to be aware that headaches are the first rung of the ladder when it comes to the 'fight or flight' syndrome so minimising anything that would encourage or stimulate adrenaline will help. Aspartame, Phenyalanine, Caffiene, Taurine and high sugar foods. This is hard for a young child or teenager but it makes a whole world of difference.
My positive experinence with homeopathy led me to become trained in traditional chinese medicine, so from that perspective i would say that rolling a tennis ball under his feet to stimulate a point called 'bubbling well' which will help nourish and balance his internal energy....this works wonders but you have to be religious with it, every day, 3 minutes each foot for a few weeks, but be gentle.
Unfortunately western medicine has no long term solution to headaches other than painkillers which will tax the body even more especially at such a young age.

Remember to get an eye test first too. Then look at trigger foods and additives. E110 and E101 are common culprites yellow and sunset yellow colourings.

My daughter 4 years old had a headache last early this year, my wife an i were distraught. I also noticed some hyperactivity the day before. Now she knows not to eat anything bright yellow or orange and we have not had a problem since.

Always look under your nose for simple signs first to save the accumulation of chemical drugs.

Try cranio-sacral therapy too! his age is perfect for this kind of treatment.

Good luck, I hope you find a solution.

You might be interested in Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) - have a look , the lower half of the page has masses on helping to deal with migraines. EFT seems to work really well with children, and of course they can use it for all sorts of other things. There is a free basic instruction download and if you want to work with a practitioner you can find one here on HP or [DLMURL="http://www.aamet.org/search/filter-members/eft-advanced-practitioners.html"]here[/DLMURL].

Hope he enjoys his trip.

His trip is not till the beginning of July but wanted to have plenty of time to research help which is why i posted now. I received the book that was suggested (migraines and epilepsy) today and will look at the EFT aswell. What i dont want to do is alarm or worry him into thinking its going to happen which is really tricky , thankyou again for suggestions i think he would be open to EFT and if i watch his diet leading up to it fingers crossed he wil be okay.
