My hubby's hearing is not as good as it was. He's 63 and worked in a noisy environment most of his life.
Does anyone know of anything other than a hearing aid which might improve things?

Wish I could help - my OH is in the same position (aged 62). Too many years as a weapons officer in HM forces - loud bangs and lack of ear defenders in his early career have wreaked havoc with his hearing. It is worse on one side than the other. He has had surgery to try and repair some damage, but it didn't work. He cannot hear 'high register' stuff, nor can he cope very well in crowds. We have learnt to avoid certain situations. He has been given a hearing aid, but it made him feel ill.
